Where you base yourself in Melbourne matters more than in most cities, because the areas genuinely feel different from each other, not just in price but in what a day from there looks like. Here’s the honest breakdown by neighbourhood.
CBD: the obvious choice for first-timers
Inside the Free Tram Zone, which means free tram travel with no card needed, and walking distance to most of the CBD’s laneways, arcades, and Federation Square. The historic Hotel Windsor and QT Melbourne on Russell St are both well-documented, central options. If it’s your first trip and you want everything close, this is the easiest call.
Southbank: arts and the river
Right on the Yarra, near the Arts Centre and Crown, Southbank suits visitors prioritising the arts precinct or Eureka Skydeck over laneway wandering. It’s still an easy walk or tram into the CBD proper, just with a different, more riverside feel.
St Kilda: the beachy option
Bayside, with Luna Park and the little penguin colony on your doorstep, St Kilda is the pick if you want a beach-town evening feel alongside city access, about 20 minutes by tram from the CBD. It skews toward backpacker and boutique options rather than the CBD’s bigger hotels.
Fitzroy and Collingwood: the hip, local pick
Vintage shops, street art, and a genuinely local feel rather than a tourist strip, Fitzroy and neighbouring Collingwood suit visitors who’ve done a first Melbourne trip already, or who’d rather stay somewhere lived-in than central. Trams into the CBD are frequent.
South Yarra and Prahran: Chapel St
The shopping-and-dining strip of Chapel St anchors this area, and it works well if that’s your priority, with easy access into the CBD by tram.
Carlton: Lygon St on your doorstep
Melbourne’s “Little Italy,” and the country’s espresso birthplace, Carlton suits visitors who want to fall out of a restaurant and into bed rather than travel for dinner. It’s an easy tram ride from the CBD’s main sights.
Booking around events
⚠ Hotel rates move noticeably around the Australian Open (January), the F1 Grand Prix (around 6-8 March 2026), and the AFL Grand Final (Saturday 26 September 2026), book well ahead if your trip overlaps any of these.
