Melbourne: Parks, Gardens and the Bay
Our hiking areas guide covers where to actually walk. This one is about green space and wildlife you can reach without much effort, most of it free, all of it inside or right at the edge of the city.
Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne
Free entry, an easy tram ride from the CBD, and genuinely one of the better gardens of its kind. It’s less about a single highlight and more about the overall walk, a couple of unhurried hours here is a solid reset from the CBD’s laneways and arcades.
The Shrine of Remembrance and its grounds
Free to visit, and the elevated grounds around the Shrine give one of the better skyline views in the city, a natural pairing with the nearby Botanic Gardens if you’re already out that way.
The Yarra River
Running through the middle of the city, the Yarra is the easiest bit of “nature” to build into a normal day: a walk along the Southbank promenade covers the water, the skyline, and the arts precinct without adding any real distance to a CBD day.
St Kilda’s bay and the penguin colony
Port Phillip Bay meets the city directly at St Kilda, and the walk along the foreshore or the breakwater is worth doing in daylight as much as at dusk. ⚠ The little penguin colony that comes ashore on the breakwater each evening is the wildlife highlight here, free to watch but now requiring a timed reservation that books out fast, sort it ahead rather than turning up and hoping.
For more wildlife: Healesville, a day trip out
If koalas, kangaroos, and wombats are what you actually want to see, the city itself won’t deliver that, Healesville Sanctuary in the Yarra Valley, about 1h15 out, is the honest answer, and it pairs naturally with a day of wine-tasting at the valley’s cellar doors. Our day trips guide covers it alongside the other options that fit a single extra day.
Keeping it simple
None of the in-city options above need a booking or a plan beyond turning up, which makes them easy to slot into a day that’s mostly laneways and museums. The one exception is the St Kilda penguins, reserve that slot early in your trip so a booked-out evening doesn’t cost you the only wildlife sighting on the itinerary.
Realistically, a first-time visitor with 3-4 days in the city core can fit the Botanic Gardens and the Yarra promenade into whichever day already has the lightest schedule, neither needs a dedicated half-day of its own. St Kilda’s bay is best folded into the evening you’re already heading there for the penguins or Luna Park, rather than a separate trip. Save Healesville for the day you’re doing the Yarra Valley anyway, trying to reach it on its own adds a long round trip for what’s otherwise a half-day stop.
