Melbourne: City Walks and Nearby Trails
Melbourne itself is a city trip, not a hiking base, but you don’t need a car to get a proper walk in, either inside the city or on one easy day trip out. If serious multi-day hiking (Wilsons Prom, the Grampians) is actually what you’re after, that’s better covered by our Melbourne, Australia: Base for Day Trips guide, which builds the whole trip around Victoria rather than the city core.
Inside the city: the Royal Botanic Gardens
Free entry and a genuinely good walk, the Royal Botanic Gardens sits an easy tram ride from the CBD and rewards an hour or two of unhurried wandering rather than a fixed route. It’s the closest thing Melbourne has to a hiking trail without leaving the city, and it pairs naturally with the nearby Shrine of Remembrance, also free.
The Yarra River promenade
From Southbank, the riverside path along the Yarra gives you a flat, easy walk with the city skyline as the backdrop for most of it. It’s not a hiking trail in the traditional sense, but it’s the best way to cover ground on foot between the CBD and Southbank’s arts precinct without a tram.
St Kilda foreshore
The walk out to St Kilda along the bay, or simply along the breakwater itself, doubles as the approach to the little penguin colony that comes ashore at dusk. ⚠ The penguins are free to watch but now need a timed reservation that books out fast, worth sorting before you set off on the walk.
Dandenong Ranges: the easiest genuine trail day out
About an hour from the city, and ⚠ reachable by Metro train to Belgrave, no car needed, which makes it the one proper hiking area that fits naturally into a city-based trip. The forested ranges are noticeably cooler and greener than Melbourne itself, and Puffing Billy, the heritage steam train, runs through them if you’d rather ride than walk the whole day. Book the Puffing Billy timed departure ahead in peak season.
Beyond a day trip
Wilsons Prom, the Grampians, and the Great Ocean Walk are all genuine multi-day hiking destinations, but none of them work as a single day from Melbourne without a long drive each way, and the Grampians in particular rewards an overnight in Halls Gap rather than a rushed there-and-back. If that kind of trip is the point of your visit rather than a city break with one add-on day, our Melbourne, Australia: Base for Day Trips guide covers it properly, this guide stays focused on what fits around the city itself. Read more: our nature spots guide covers the same in-city green space plus where to actually see wildlife.
