Melbourne: Nature Spots, City and Day Trips
Melbourne’s own nature is compact and free; the genuine wildlife encounters are a day trip away. Here’s both halves.
Royal Botanic Gardens and the Shrine of Remembrance
Both free and both inside the city itself, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the adjacent Shrine of Remembrance are the easiest nature stop on any city day, no drive required and no booking needed. Good for a couple of hours between the CBD’s laneways and an afternoon further out.
Werribee Open Range Zoo: the closest wildlife day trip
About 30 minutes from the CBD, the shortest drive of any day trip on this list. Animals roam in open, African-style savannah enclosures rather than standard pens, a genuinely different zoo format and an easy half-day if you don’t have time for the Yarra Valley or the coast.
Healesville Sanctuary: the Yarra Valley’s wildlife stop
About 1h15 from the city as part of a true Yarra Valley day trip, Healesville Sanctuary pairs koalas, kangaroos, and wombats in a bush setting with the valley’s wine cellar doors on the same day. It’s the wildlife stop most visitors pair with wine rather than visiting on its own.
Kennett River: wild koalas on the Great Ocean Road
If you’re doing the Great Ocean Road properly, as a 2-day, 1-night trip rather than a rushed single day, Kennett River is the reliable stop for spotting koalas in the treetops along the way, not in an enclosure but genuinely wild. It sits roughly partway along the drive out, a natural break before continuing to Apollo Bay.
Phillip Island: penguins at dusk
⚠ Phillip Island’s little penguins come ashore at dusk specifically, which shapes the whole day around a late return. Tickets run around AUD $33 and need booking ahead, this sells out. Car or a guided tour only, the V/Line bus doesn’t reach the Penguin Parade site itself.
Grampians: wildlife alongside the hiking
The Grampians, 2.5-3 hours out and better as a Halls Gap overnight than a rushed day, add native wildlife to the sandstone-range scenery, worth building into the same trip as the hiking rather than treating as a separate reason to go.
Picking one if you only have a day
If wildlife is the priority and you only have one spare day, Healesville Sanctuary in the Yarra Valley is the easiest single choice, no overnight, a true day trip, and wine on the same itinerary if you want it.
