Melbourne: The Real Events Calendar
Melbourne’s identity runs on its sporting calendar more than any other single thing, and that calendar is worth planning around, both for the atmosphere and because accommodation prices move with it. Here’s what actually drives the year.
Australian Open (January)
Tennis at Melbourne Park runs every January, always, and it’s the easiest of these events to build a trip around since the dates don’t shift year to year. Expect the CBD and Southbank to be noticeably busier, and hotel rates to reflect it.
F1 Australian Grand Prix (around 6-8 March 2026)
Formula 1 runs at Albert Park in early March, drawing a crowd well beyond motorsport fans given the lakeside setting. Book accommodation early if your trip lands in this window, rates spike across the city, not just near the circuit.
AFL season and the Grand Final (Saturday 26 September 2026)
AFL runs March-September, split between the MCG and Marvel Stadium, and it’s genuinely the city’s defining sporting identity rather than a seasonal add-on. The Grand Final itself, Saturday 26 September 2026, is the single biggest date on the sporting calendar, and the city empties out for it in a way that’s worth experiencing even if you don’t have a ticket to the match. Melbourne Cup (Tuesday 3 November 2026)
“The race that stops a nation” runs at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November. ⚠ It’s a genuine public holiday, but only in metro Melbourne, not the rest of the country, a detail that trips up a lot of visitors planning around it as a national event.
Comedy season (March-April)
Melbourne’s comedy festival season runs through March and April each year, filling venues across the CBD with a mix of local and international acts. If your trip overlaps with it, expect competition for hotel rooms similar to the F1 window.
Planning around any of this
Two things matter more than the specific dates: book accommodation well ahead if your trip overlaps any of the above, and expect trams and the CBD generally to be busier without it necessarily disrupting your own plans, Melbourne absorbs a big event without shutting down around it. For the rest of the year, spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May) remain the best general windows weather-wise, independent of any single event.
