Hosier Lane, the city’s obvious stop
Melbourne’s most photographed laneway, an ever-changing wall of street art that looks different every time you visit. Go in daylight for color accuracy and again after dark if you want the wet-pavement reflections the lane is known for.
Eureka Skydeck, the city skyline shot
88 floors up in Southbank, Eureka Skydeck runs around AUD $30-40 and gives you the CBD, the Yarra, and Port Phillip Bay in one frame. ⚠ The Melbourne Star observation wheel is closed for restoration, don’t plan an alternative wheel shot around it.
The Twelve Apostles, best with the overnight
The marquee shot of any Victoria trip, and one that rewards the 2-day, 1-night version of the Great Ocean Road far more than a rushed single day. Arriving the evening before means you can be at the lookouts for early light rather than fighting midday sun and tour-bus crowds after a long drive.
Kennett River: wild koalas in the treetops
Along the same Great Ocean Road route, Kennett River is the reliable stop for photographing koalas genuinely wild in the treetops rather than in an enclosure, worth the slow drive-through with your window down.
Yarra Valley: vineyard rows and Healesville’s wildlife
About 1h15 out, the Yarra Valley pairs vineyard-row shots at the cellar doors with wildlife photography at Healesville Sanctuary, koalas, kangaroos, and wombats in a bush setting rather than a city zoo backdrop.
Phillip Island at dusk
⚠ The little penguins come ashore at dusk specifically, and while photography of the parade itself is restricted, the island’s coastline around Cape Woolamai is worth shooting in the same low evening light before the penguins arrive. Tickets run around AUD $33 and need booking ahead.
The Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy
About an hour out and reachable by Metro train, the heritage steam train crossing its timber trestle bridges is one of the more distinctive shots in the whole Victoria day-trip list, and the surrounding forest gives a genuinely different green than anything in the city.
The Grampians, worth the overnight for the light
At 2.5-3 hours out, the Grampians reward the Halls Gap overnight with sunrise and sunset light over the sandstone ranges that a rushed day trip simply doesn’t leave time for.
