Luxembourg Walking Routes and Trails
Luxembourg offers two kinds of walks: short loops through the old fortress city and long forest trails in the Mullerthal and the Ardennes. Second-class trains, trams and buses are free, so you can walk one way and ride back at no cost. First class on trains is paid. Distances below come from official trail pages unless noted.
Wenzel Circular Walk
The Visit Luxembourg trail page describes a loop that starts at the Bock Casemates and covers 2.5 km in about 3 hours. It is graded easy, with a highest point of 305 m and a lowest of 250 m. A longer version of about 5.5 km is described elsewhere, so check the length on the signs. Read the Wenzel walk page .
Vauban Circular Walk
A second loop also begins at the Bock promontory. Its length is not confirmed, so ask at the tourist office at 30 Place Guillaume II, which is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00 and Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00.
Chemin de la Corniche
This free walkway follows the ramparts from the Bock promontory and looks down on the Grund. It is short and flat enough to pair with either circular walk.
Guided walks in the casemates
The Bock Casemates tour lasts 1 hour, takes up to 20 people and costs EUR 20 for adults, EUR 16 for students and seniors and EUR 10 for under 12s. The Petrusse Casemates tour is 1 hour for up to 12 people at EUR 24 for adults. Both start at fixed times, so check the city tourist office .
Mullerthal Trail
The official network is about 112 km in three loops: Route 1 is 36.7 km around Echternach, Route 2 is 39.7 km through Berdorf, Mullerthal and Scheidgen, and Route 3 is 37.7 km through Mullerthal, Blumenthal, Larochette and Beaufort. Five ExtraTours measure 22.8, 13, 9.3, 31.5 and 25.5 km. Routes 2 and 3 pass the Schiessentumpel waterfall, and the local walk W7 reaches it in 10.2 km from Heringer Millen. Route 2 includes the Kuelscheier rock passage, which is very narrow and pitch dark, so bring a flashlight.
Hunters are active from mid-October to January or February, so check hunt dates on the Mullerthal map before you set out. To reach Echternach, take the tram to Luxexpo and then a bus, about every 30 minutes, and check line numbers on mobiliteit.lu.
Eislek and Lee trails
The Eislek Trail runs 107.29 km in five stages from Kautenbach to La Roche-en-Ardenne in Belgium. The Lee and Escapardenne routes are described in a Visit Eislek brochure at about 158 km over eight stages combined, a figure worth confirming locally. Stay on marked paths and never touch metal objects in fields or woods; wartime munitions still turn up in the north and east.
Upper Sure amphibian tour
The Upper Sure Lake offers a mix of boat and walk. A solar boat from Insenborn is combined with an 8 km walk on the left bank, signposted ES 10, for 3.5 to 4 hours. It costs EUR 5 for adults and EUR 2.50 for children. The boat runs from May to 1 October, so it is closed now.
Tips
- Wear sturdy shoes for the Mullerthal and carry water.
- Bring a flashlight for the Kuelscheier passage.
- Pickpockets work on buses and around the main station, so keep your bag zipped.
