Estonia With Kids: Science, Zoo, Bog Walks
Estonia suits family travel well, with a science centre, a zoo, an open-air museum and easy boardwalks. Family tickets are common, so the cost per person falls for 2 adults with children. All prices are in euro and are the published tiers.
AHHAA Science Centre, Tartu
AHHAA is at Sadama 1. It opens 10:00 to 19:00 Monday to Thursday and Sunday, 10:00 to 20:00 on Friday and Saturday, and is closed on 24 December. An adult ticket is €20, a student ticket is €15, a family ticket is €45, and preschool children are free. The planetarium is sold separately, so ask for the price at the desk. The Hall of Nature has wood ants, chickens and tropical fish, and visitor guides also mention a tightrope bike and a mirror maze. See the AHHAA site for current hours.
Tallinn Zoo and the Open Air Museum
Tallinn Zoo keeps 364 species on 89 hectares. Polarium houses polar bears (four since April 2025, according to ERR), and the Pachyderm house has elephants. The ticket office is open 9:00 to 18:00 and the zoo itself to 19:00. From May to September a family ticket (2 adults and children up to 19) is €37 and an adult is €18. From October to April the family ticket is €27 and an adult is €12. Preschool children are free. The zoo’s ticket page has the current prices.
At the Estonian Open Air Museum in Rocca al Mare, a family ticket costs €38 in summer (23 April to 28 September) and €30 in winter (29 September to 22 April, Tuesday to Sunday). A combined family ticket for the zoo and the museum is €55 in summer and €40 in winter, which is cheaper than buying both separately. See the Open Air Museum ticket page .
Estonian National Museum
In Tartu, the National Museum charges €32 for a family of 2 adults and minors, and children up to 8 go in free. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Monday. Every second Sunday of the month is half price. The Smart Ticket lets you change the exhibition language, and bus 7 runs from the centre.
Viru Bog boardwalk
For a first bog walk, the Viru Bog trail in Lahemaa is free and suits strollers as far as the tower. The tower is about 1.3 to 1.4 km from the car park and stands about 11 m high. Rubber boots help on wet days. The trail is 3.5 km across the bog, and a loop back by forest road is 5.7 km. Keep children on the boardwalk at all times.
Lottemaa (summer only)
Lottemaa, about 6 km south of Pärnu, is a summer theme park. In summer 2026 tickets were €29 for ages 2 and over, with children aged 0 to 1 free, and it ran daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Parking costs €4 and a small train from the car park to the entrance costs €2 each way. The park is closed at the moment and its next summer season is 2027. Its website shows opening dates and the winter programme.
Tips for families
- Check the cafe hours at museums before you rely on them, since some cut hours outside summer.
- In winter, daylight is short, so plan outdoor visits for midday.
- Snow tyres are required on cars from 1 December to 15 March.
