Luxembourg Multi Day Hikes and Cycling
Luxembourg is about 82 km from north to south and 57 km from east to west, so most visitors stay in the capital and make day trips. Multi-day travel here is self-guided: long-distance hiking trails, a cycle route and a capital-based plan, with no package circuit to join. Second-class trains, trams and buses are free, which makes it easy to reach a trailhead and come back. Prices are in euros.
Mullerthal Trail in stages
The official trail is about 112 km in three loops, and each route can be hiked in two day stages according to the official pages.
- Route 2 is 39.7 km through Echternach, Berdorf, Mullerthal and Scheidgen, with the Kuelscheier rock passage and the Wollefsschlucht. Bring a flashlight for the Kuelscheier, which is very narrow and dark.
- Route 3 is 37.7 km through Mullerthal, Blumenthal, Larochette and Beaufort.
- Five shorter ExtraTours, labelled A to E, run from 9.3 to 31.5 km.
Hunters are active from mid-October to January or February, so check hunt dates on the trail map. The trails are free. The official Mullerthal Trail page lists every route.
Eislek Trail
The Eislek Trail runs 107.29 km in five stages from Kautenbach to La Roche-en-Ardenne, which is in Belgium. The Lee and Escapardenne trails can be combined into a longer route of about 158 km over eight stages, a figure to check with the Visit Eislek tourist board. Hikers in the north and east should stay on marked paths and never touch metal objects in fields or woods, since wartime munitions still turn up there.
Cycling the Moselle, Sure and Our
The PC 3 cycle path, called Trois Rivieres, follows the Moselle, Sure and Our rivers for about 90 km from Schengen to Vianden. Treat that distance as approximate and confirm it on a current cycling map.
A capital base with day trips
Staying in one place and travelling out each day works well, because trains and buses are free. A three day plan could pair the city with Vianden on one day, the Moselle towns on another and Echternach with the Mullerthal on a third. For a structured version, see the Luxembourg 3 day itinerary .
Trier is about 50 minutes by an hourly regional train, and Metz about 45 to 55 minutes, though both timings are approximate. Bastogne is in Belgium and takes about an hour by FlixBus. Cross-border tickets cost extra, so check CFL.
Where to stay
Grand Hotel Cravat on boulevard Roosevelt in the capital and Chateau d’Urspelt in the Clervaux area appear on booking sites as operating hotels. Rates vary by season, so compare prices before you book. The chairlift and solar boat are closed in winter, so a base with good train and bus links suits the cold months best.
What is not available
Luxembourg has no downhill ski resort. Belgian ski areas are over the border and belong to a different province. Rock climbing is limited to the Wanterbaach rocks in Berdorf and only for members of a climbing association, so it is not an option for most visitors.
