Family Activities in Luxembourg for Kids
Families get an easy run in Luxembourg: second-class trains, trams and buses are free for everyone, so a day out costs only entry fees. First class on trains is paid. The LuxembourgPass covers sights, not transport, and starts from about EUR 23 for a day, which can pay off for a family visiting several paid sites. Prices are in euros.
Parc Merveilleux, Bettembourg
This wildlife park is closed for winter and reopens on 20 March 2027. It describes itself as Luxembourg’s only wildlife park, with nearly 200 species from five continents, a mini-zoo with dwarf goats, playgrounds and mini-golf. A dated online ticket is EUR 15 for adults, EUR 11 for children 3 to 14 and EUR 13 for students and seniors, while gate prices are EUR 17, EUR 13 and EUR 15. Under 3s are free, and rides cost EUR 1.50 a token. Entry is free with the LuxembourgPass. Bus 550 runs Monday to Saturday every 30 minutes from Bettembourg station, and a free shuttle runs at weekends. Check the park’s own site for the 2027 calendar.
Luxembourg Science Center, Differdange
Adults pay EUR 17, and ages 6 to 17, students and people 65 and over pay EUR 10. Under 6s are free. Science shows last 45 to 60 minutes, suit ages 6 and up and are included, though seats are limited. The exploration room takes about 3 hours. The Kitchen Lab costs EUR 6.50 extra and is for ages 8 and over. Hours are 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 18:00 at weekends and on holidays. The pass gives 30 per cent off. Read the visitor information before you go.
Schengen Museum
The museum at 1 Rue Robert Goebbels is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30. Entry is EUR 5, or EUR 3 for ages 7 to 17, and up to age 6 is free. The ticket includes the boat Prinzessin Marie-Astrid Europa. A children’s booklet is available, and the pass makes entry free.
Natur musee in the Grund
At 25 rue Munster, the natural history museum charges EUR 7 for adults and EUR 5 reduced, and is free under 21. Entry is also free on Tuesdays from 17:30. It is open Tuesday 10:00 to 20:00 and Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, and is closed on Mondays.
Echternach lake and the Vianden chairlift
Echternach has a lake with a designated swimming area, open in the bathing season from May to September. The Adventure Island high ropes course sits at the youth hostel, and the same hostel has an indoor climbing wall 14 m high plus bouldering. The Vianden chairlift runs from about April to October and costs EUR 5 return for children under 14. It is closed now.
Butterfly Garden in Grevenmacher
The Paiperleksgaart lists tickets from EUR 10 on weekdays and EUR 11 at weekends, in one-hour time slots, with booking recommended. The 2025 season ran from April to October, and 2026 dates are best checked on papillons.lu .
Free lifts and trams
The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift and the funicular to Kirchberg are free and short. The funicular climbs 40 metres in 63 seconds. The Luxtram T1 runs from Findel Airport to Stadion/Cloche d’Or, with 24 stops and no fare.
Tips
- Plan around the weather: Parc Merveilleux, the chairlift and the lake are summer outings, while the Science Center and museums work year round.
- Children aged 5 to 17 hiring a canoe or kayak at Lultzhausen must be with an adult.
- Hikers in the north and east should stay on marked paths and teach children never to pick up metal objects, since wartime munitions still turn up there.
