Things to Do in Luxembourg
Luxembourg is small enough to pack a trail walk, a cellar tour and a city lift ride into one day. Second-class trains, trams and buses are free nationwide; first class on trains is paid. The LuxembourgPass covers sights only, not transport, and starts from about EUR 23 for a day. Prices below are in euros.
Mullerthal Trail
The Mullerthal region, around Echternach, Berdorf and Larochette, has sandstone gorges, rock passages and woodland paths. The official trail is about 112 km in three loops. Route 2 (39.7 km) and Route 3 (37.7 km) both pass the Schiessentumpel waterfall and its 1879 sandstone bridge on the Black Ernz, about 500 m from the Schiessentumpel parking. Route 2 also squeezes through the Kuelscheier rock passage, which is very narrow and pitch dark, so bring a flashlight. The trails are free.
Hunters are active from mid-October to January or February, so check the hunt dates on the Mullerthal map before you set out. To get there, take the tram to the Luxexpo bus terminal and change to a bus to Echternach, about every 30 minutes. Look up line numbers on mobiliteit.lu as they change. Read the route notes on the official Mullerthal Trail page .
Caves St Martin in Remich
The limestone tunnels at 53 route de Stadtbredimus run for nearly a kilometre. Entry is by guided tour only, about 45 minutes, from mid-March to mid-December. The traditional tour with one glass of wine or cremant costs EUR 9. Listed hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:30. The tour is free with the LuxembourgPass. See the Caves St Martin listing for current times.
Pfaffenthal lift and funicular
Both are free and make a quick way between the old town and the valley. The panoramic lift runs from Pescatore park down to Pfaffenthal and is listed as open 05:45 to 01:00, though it is out of order on the first Monday of every month. The funicular climbs about 40 metres in 63 seconds and links the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg station with the Kirchberg tram.
Upper Sure Lake
The solar boat leaves from Insenborn, takes about 2 hours with a guide and needs a booking. It runs from May to 1 October, with no trips on Mondays, and dogs are not allowed. An adult ticket is EUR 10 and a child under 13 pays EUR 5. In 2026 the Lultzhausen youth hostel rented canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards from 23 May to 13 September, from EUR 22 for 3 hours per boat, with a EUR 100 deposit. Children aged 5 to 17 must be with an adult.
Official bathing areas open from May to September only, so the lake is for walking and watching now.
Belval blast furnaces
The old steelworks stand at Esch-sur-Alzette, on Avenue du Rock’n’Roll. Entry is EUR 5, EUR 3 for people 65 and over or with reduced mobility, and free under 21 or with the LuxembourgPass. Listed hours are 10:00 to 19:00, closed Tuesday. Children under 12 must be accompanied.
Vianden chairlift
The Vianden chairlift is the only chairlift in the country. The 2026 season ran from 4 April to 19 October, so expect it to run from about April to October again. Adults pay EUR 9.50 return, children under 14 EUR 5, and the LuxembourgPass makes it free.
Planning notes
- Hours shrink in winter, and the chairlift, solar boat and lake beaches close from autumn.
- Hikers in the north and east should stay on marked paths and never touch metal objects in fields or woods, because wartime munitions still turn up there.
- Climbing is limited to the Wanterbaach rocks in Berdorf and only for members of a recognised climbing association. Casual visitors can try the indoor wall at the Echternach youth hostel instead.
