Estonia Day Trips from Tallinn and Tartu
Tallinn and Tartu are good bases for day trips, and the best ones go to Lahemaa, Haapsalu, Pärnu and the Onion Route. Journey times are approximate and fares are dynamic, so confirm them on the day.
Lahemaa National Park from Tallinn
The edge of the park is about 50 to 60 minutes by car from Tallinn. For the Viru Bog trail, leave the E20 toward Loksa at the 52nd kilometre, near Kolga. The trail is free, runs 3.5 km across the bog, and an observation tower stands 1.3 to 1.4 km from the car park, which holds 91 cars. The loop back by forest road is 5.7 km. In the park, Palmse and Sagadi manors, the Käsmu Sea Museum (€6) and the village of Altja make a full day. Altja tavern hours differ between listings, so check before you go.
Jägala Waterfall, about 25 km east of Tallinn, is a free roadside stop outside the park. It is about 8 m high and 50 m wide. Guided day tours from Tallinn exist, but prices vary a lot, so compare operators. The Viru Bog trail page lists the route and the tower.
Haapsalu
Lux Express coaches from Tallinn take about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes, with fares of about €8 to 10 on aggregators. The timetable changed in April 2026, so check Lux Express . Haapsalu has no passenger trains. The Episcopal Castle charges €12 for adults and is closed on Monday and Tuesday from 1 September to 31 May. The covered railway platform is 216 m long. Opening hours at the Railway and Communications Museum differ by source, so confirm them first.
Pärnu
Coaches from Tallinn take about 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours, with fares from about €6. The passenger train line from Tallinn closed in December 2018, and buses via Rapla replaced it. Rail Baltica is not expected before about 2030. In town, the Red Tower (Hommiku 11) charges €8 for adults and €17 for a family, and the 1927 mud baths building at Ranna pst 1 is worth a look from outside. Lottemaa, a family park about 6 km south, is summer only.
Tartu and the Onion Route
From Tartu, the Kolkja Old Believers Museum (Ranna 17) is open daily 11:00 to 18:00 from 1 May to 31 August, and Wednesday to Saturday 11:00 to 17:00 the rest of the year. Tickets start from about €11 for adults. Alatskivi Castle is about 40 km from Tartu and costs €12, with winter hours of Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00.
Narva
Narva is an ordinary Estonian day trip for the castle at Peetri plats 7 (€16, family €32), the river promenade and the Kreenholm mill buildings. Elron runs trains from Tallinn, but works on the Tapa to Narva line in 2026 make timetables uncertain, so check Elron . The border footbridge to Ivangorod is not an excursion. It is foot-only, and Estonian-side hours were shortened from June 2026, so ask the Police and Border Guard Board if you need it for other reasons.
Saaremaa needs a night
The coach from Tallinn to Kuressaare takes about 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes, plus the ferry crossing. Stay at least one night.

Klooga memorial
Klooga, west of Tallinn, is a place of remembrance and should be visited as a separate, quiet half day. The camp was set up in September 1943, and nearly 2,000 Jews were shot there on 19 September 1944. An outdoor exhibition by the Estonian History Museum stands beside Lake Sooda. It is free and open at all hours. Take the Elron train on the Paldiski line to Klooga-Aedlinn, about 50 minutes from Balti jaam. The camp is next to the stop. By car it is about 45 minutes. Details are on Visit Estonia .
