Ljubljana Multi-Day Trips: A 5-Day Loop
Five Days Around Ljubljana
Slovenia rewards slow travel, because the capital sits within 2 hours’ drive of the Alps, the karst caves and the Adriatic. Public transport thins out once you leave the main routes, so a rental car or a small group van makes a loop far easier than buses.
Day 1 and 2: Ljubljana
Give the capital a day and a half. The pedestrian-only old centre, the castle and the river are covered on the sightseeing page , and if you want a structured approach the Ljubljana Card costs €41 for 24 hours or €49 for 48. Plečnik House and the National Gallery fill a second morning.
Day 3: Postojna and Predjama
The cave is 46 km south-west, about 45 minutes by car. Cave entry is €34.90 at peak times, and the Two Adventures combination with Predjama Castle is €49.90 to €58.90. Book ahead in summer, wear a jacket for the constant 10°C, and see Postojna Cave Park for options. If you have time, the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves lie roughly 75 km from Ljubljana, with underground river scenery at about 12°C.
Day 4: Piran and the coast
Piran is about 120 km and 1 hour 20 minutes from the capital. Walk the town walls, spend time in Tartini Square and eat Adriatic seafood. Staying one night on the coast avoids a very long drive back.
Day 5: Bled, Vintgar and Bohinj
Lake Bled is 55 km north-west of Ljubljana, and Bohinj is about 80 km. Combine them over a day or give each a night.
- Bled Castle: adult entry €19, with details at blejski-grad.si .
- Pletna boat to the island: €20 adult return, cash only.
- Vintgar Gorge: €10 adult for the gorge or €15 for the all-in-one ticket, sold online only at tickets.vintgar.si . The season runs from April to October.
- Vogel cable car: adult return about €32 to €35 depending on the season. The main gondola is under maintenance until about 1 December 2026, so autumn visits to Bohinj should centre on the lake and its walks. Check Vogel before you go.
Kranjska Gora’s ski season starts in December, so winter trips can swap the lakes for the slopes.
Dates that shape the plan
- Vintgar is a spring-to-October stop.
- Bled Castle closes at 20:00 from April to October and at 18:00 from November to March.
- Odprta Kuhna, the Friday food market in Ljubljana, runs from March to October.
Booking the car
Compare rental prices at DiscoverCars and collect it after your city days, since you do not need a car inside the pedestrian zone.
Tip
Sleep in Ljubljana on the first and last nights, so luggage stays put and morning departures are short. The day trips page lists every distance in order.
