Ljubljana: Green Spaces in the City
For a capital, Ljubljana is unusually green, and you do not have to leave the city to find somewhere to sit under trees or by water. These are the places to slow down within the centre, less about trails than about spots to spend an hour. Tivoli Park
Tivoli is the city’s central park, roughly 5 square kilometres of lawns, ponds and tree-lined avenues bordering the centre. The rose garden, the small ponds and the benches along the Jakopic Promenade make it the default place for a picnic or a quiet afternoon. It borders the Roznik woods at its western end if you want to wander further.
The Botanical Garden
Ljubljana’s Botanical Garden, founded in 1810, is one of the oldest in this part of Europe and sits just southeast of the centre near the river. It is small, calm and cheap to enter, with several thousand plant species arranged along shaded paths. It makes an easy pairing with a walk along the Spica riverbank next door.
Koseze Pond
In the northwest of the city, Koseze Pond is a reed-fringed lake ringed by an easy walking path, popular with families, joggers and birdwatchers. Frogs, ducks and dragonflies make it feel far from the centre despite the short bus ride out, and there are cafes at the water’s edge for a break.
The Ljubljanica embankments
The river itself is the city’s longest green corridor. Car-free since 2007, the embankments between the bridges are lined with willows and cafe terraces, and the walk upstream toward Trnovo and Spica trades crowds for calm. A riverside coffee here beats the paid boat cruise for the same view.
The Ljubljana Marsh
South of the city, the Ljubljana Marsh is a wide, flat wetland of meadows and waterways protected as a nature park, one of the best birdwatching areas near any European capital.
