Ljubljana: Hills and Walks in the City
Ljubljana is not an alpine trailhead, and any guide that promises mountain hikes inside the city is inventing them. What the city does have is a set of easy forested hills and green corridors you can reach on foot or by bus, good for a half-day of walking without leaving town. The serious Julian Alps routes are a drive away and covered in our Slovenia hiking guide . These are the walks you can do from the centre.
Roznik Hill
Roznik is the wooded hill rising west of the centre, reached in about 20 to 30 minutes on foot from Tivoli Park. At 394m it is a gentle climb on shaded paths to a small hilltop church and an inn, a favourite local Sunday walk. It links directly to Tivoli, so you can make a loop of park and hill in a couple of easy hours.
Golovec
Golovec is the forested ridge southeast of the old town, less visited than Roznik and quieter for it. Trails climb from the edge of the centre through woodland to the astronomical observatory, and the ridge connects toward the castle hill if you want a longer walk. It is the closest thing the city has to a proper woodland hike.
Tivoli Park and the Jakopic Promenade
Tivoli is roughly 5 square kilometres of green bordering the centre, with wide gravel paths, the axial Jakopic Promenade laid out by Plecnik, and gentle slopes toward Roznik at its western end. It is flat, easy and the natural starting point for the hill walks above, as well as a fine walk in its own right.
The Path of Remembrance, the PST
The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship traces the ring where the occupied city was once encircled by wire during the Second World War. The full loop is about 33km of flat, tree-lined trail, but you can join it for a short stretch anywhere it crosses the suburbs. It is the one walk that circles the whole city, popular with local runners.
The Ljubljana Marsh (Barje)
South of the centre, the Ljubljana Marsh is a broad wetland of meadows, ditches and hedgerows, protected as a nature park and rich in birdlife. The walking here is flat rather than steep, better suited to a bike or a long level stroll, and it holds the remains of prehistoric pile dwellings. It is a genuinely different landscape a short ride from the old town. For the full city, see our Ljubljana city guide .
