Ljubljana: Where to Base Your Trip
The big lodging decision for a Slovenia trip is not which hotel but whether to base the whole trip in Ljubljana or split your nights out at the lakes and coast. Ljubljana is central enough to reach most of the country on day trips, which makes it the simplest base, but there are good reasons to move for part of a longer trip. Base everything in Ljubljana
For trips of up to about four days, one base in Ljubljana is usually the right call. Bled is 45 to 55 minutes away, Postojna about an hour, and you avoid the hassle of packing and re-checking-in every night. You get the city’s restaurants and nightlife in the evenings and drive out to a different landscape each day. It is the low-stress option, and the one most short trips should take.
When to overnight at Bled or Bohinj
If lakes and mountains are the point of the trip, one or two nights at Bled or Bohinj change the experience. You get the lake at dawn and dusk, before and after the day-trippers, which is when it looks best, and you shorten the drives to Vintgar, the Vrsic Pass and the higher trails. Bohinj in particular rewards staying over, since it is furthest out and quietest.
When to overnight in the Soca Valley
The Soca Valley around Bovec is 2 to 2.5 hours from Ljubljana, far enough that a day trip burns most of the day driving. If you want to raft, canyon or hike there properly, book a night in Bovec rather than doing the round trip in one exhausting push. It also sets you up to drive the Vrsic Pass toward Kranjska Gora the next morning.
A night on the coast
Piran and the coast are about 1h20 to 1h40 out, doable as a day trip but lovely to stay in once the day-trippers leave and the light turns gold on the walls. A single night in the car-free old town, parking at the edge and walking in, is a fine way to break up an alpine-heavy itinerary.

Reserve your Ljubljana nights first, then decide how many to peel off for the lakes, coast or valley based on your total length.
