Ljubljana: Slovenia's Best Nature
Slovenia fits an improbable range of landscapes into a small country: glacial lakes, a turquoise alpine river, some of Europe’s great caves and a short Adriatic coast, all within day-trip reach of Ljubljana. Lake Bled
Bled is the country’s signature landscape, a glacial lake with an island church under a cliff-top castle and the Julian Alps behind. Go at opening before the tour buses, take the pletna boat out to the island for EUR 20 return, and walk the flat shoreline loop for the best views. It earns its fame.
Lake Bohinj
Bohinj, deeper inside Triglav National Park, is the wilder, quieter lake, ringed by mountains and genuinely swimmable in summer. It sees a fraction of Bled’s crowds and rewards anyone willing to drive the extra half hour. The Vogel cable car above it opens up the high country for EUR 28 return.
The Soca river
The Soca, in the valley around Bovec, runs an almost unreal shade of turquoise through gorges and over pale stone. It is the heart of Slovenia’s whitewater scene and beautiful even from the bank, though the drive out is 2 to 2.5 hours and deserves a full day. Few rivers in Europe look like it.
The Skocjan Caves
Nature runs underground here too. The Skocjan Caves, a UNESCO site southwest of the city, hold a vast collapsed doline and an underground canyon crossed by a footbridge high above the river, at a constant 10C. It is more dramatic and less crowded than Postojna, and one of the most memorable natural sights in the country.
The Strunjan coast
Slovenia’s coast is only about 47km long, and its wildest stretch is the Strunjan nature reserve near Piran, where sandstone cliffs drop to the Adriatic above salt pans and a quiet bay.
