Ljubljana: Slovenia Road-Trip Tips
Once you leave Ljubljana for the lakes, caves and coast, the trip becomes a driving one, and a handful of things are worth knowing before you set off. This guide covers the country logistics; for getting around the city itself, see our city travel tips .
You will want a car
Public transport reaches Bled and Postojna directly, but the sites between each other, Bohinj, Skocjan, Piran and the Soca Valley, connect badly and eat the day. A rental car from Ljubljana starts around EUR 27 a day and earns that back the moment a trip combines more than one stop. It is the standard move even for people who walk the city itself.
The motorway vignette
Slovenia’s motorways require a vignette, now a digital e-vignette rather than a windscreen sticker. Rental cars usually include one, but confirm it before you drive off, since police checks are automated and fines for driving the motorway without it are steep. If you cross in from Italy, Austria or Croatia in your own car, buy one online before you reach the motorway.
Book the caves and Vintgar ahead
The Vintgar Gorge sells hourly timed slots and the Postojna and Skocjan caves fill in peak season, so book 48 hours ahead or more in summer rather than turning up. The caves hold a constant 10C year-round, so pack a layer even in August; a rain jacket is rentable on site at Postojna for a few euros.
Beat the Bled crowds
Bled is swamped by tour buses from mid-morning, so go at opening or make it a stop on the way to or from Bohinj rather than a standalone midday trip. And skip the lakefront cream cake at EUR 7 to 9 a slice for the same thing inland at closer to EUR 4.
Getting in and out
Ljubljana’s airport has no rail link and thin long-haul service, so factor in a connection or consider flying into Trieste, Zagreb or Venice and driving across the border, often 1.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the city.
