Day Trips From Ljubljana by Distance
Day Trips From Ljubljana, Nearest First
Slovenia is small enough that a cave, an alpine lake and the Adriatic are each one drive from the capital. Ranking them by distance makes the day easier to plan, because drive time decides how much of the day is left for the place itself.
Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle (46 km, about 45 minutes)
The closest big draw is also the most expensive. The cave visit is €34.90 in peak season, and the Two Adventures combination with Predjama Castle is €49.90 to €58.90. Inside, an electric train carries you through the karst chambers, and the temperature holds near 10°C all year. Predjama Castle sits in a 123 m cliff face. The park also has a Vivarium where you can see olms, the pale cave salamanders. Tickets and slots are on the Postojna Cave Park site , and in summer it pays to book ahead.
Lake Bled (55 km, 45 to 55 minutes by car)
Bled is a mountain resort town of its own, and buses take about 1 hour 15 minutes. The island church is reached by pletna rowing boat, €20 adult return, paid in cash. The castle above the lake costs €19 for adults and opens 8:00 to 20:00 from April to October, then 8:00 to 18:00 from November to March, as listed at Bled Castle . Swim only in the designated zones, such as the lifeguarded Castle Bathing Area. Try the local cream cake, kremšnita, before heading back. Look at Bled tours on GetYourGuide if you want a guided minibus day.
Vintgar Gorge (near Bled)
A wooden boardwalk follows the Radovna river through a narrow gorge. Entry is €10 for adults and €5 for children, or €15 for the all-in-one ticket that adds the Vintgarjenje trail and Green Access, which covers the car park and the e-bus. Cars cannot drive to the gorge itself. The season runs April to October and tickets are sold online only at tickets.vintgar.si . Helmets are required and entry is capped at 245 people at a time, so go early.
Škocjan Caves (about 75 km)
This UNESCO site has an underground river canyon, with temperatures around 12°C. Tours are guided, so check times and prices at Škocjan Caves Park before you set off.
Lake Bohinj (about 80 km, 1 hour 20 minutes)
Bohinj lies inside Triglav National Park and feels wilder than Bled. The Savica Waterfall is the classic walk. The Vogel cable car adult return is about €32 to €35 depending on the season, but the main gondola is under maintenance until about 1 December 2026, so plan October and November around the lake shore and check Vogel for reopening.
Piran (about 120 km, 1 hour 20 minutes)
The Adriatic coast town has Venetian Gothic lanes, a Tartini Square and town walls you can climb. It makes a long day, so leave Ljubljana early.
Planning tips
- Combine Bled and Vintgar in one day, and keep Postojna for a wet day.
- Underground sites are cool in every month, so bring a warm layer.
- Velika Planina, reached by gondola from Kamniška Bistrica, is another option, and Velika Planina has the current details.
