Islamabad Multi-Day Trip Planner
Travel advisory, 31 October 2026. The US State Department lists Pakistan at Level 3, Reconsider Travel (page dated 16 June 2026), and advises against or to reconsider travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The UK FCDO page, updated 27 October 2026, does not name Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree or Taxila, but it advises against all or all but essential travel to other parts of the country, including parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Islamabad has seen serious attacks, among them a district-court bombing in November 2025 and a mosque bombing at Tarlai on the city edge on 6 February 2026. Read travel.state.gov and the UK travel advice before you book. Expect checkpoints, protest road closures and mobile-network shutdowns, stay away from crowds and demonstrations, and carry your original passport.
A three-day plan around Islamabad
Islamabad works best as a base for two or three days, with Taxila and Rohtas Fort added from Punjab. Both of those lie outside the areas the UK FCDO names, and Taxila is about 35 km from the capital.
Day 1: the capital. Start at Faisal Mosque, free to enter with modest dress, then cross to Shakarparian for the Pakistan Monument Museum and the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum. Both museums close on Mondays and charge foreign adults about PKR 2,000. End with the free viewpoint at Daman-e-Koh. Prices are on Lok Virsa .
Day 2: Taxila. Taxila is a UNESCO site inscribed in 1980. The museum charges foreign visitors about PKR 500, and hours vary by source, so check before you go. The Dharmarajika, Jaulian and Sirkap sites may each charge a separate small fee.
Day 3: Rohtas Fort or the Margalla trails. Rohtas Fort, built 1541 to 1548 by Sher Shah Suri near Dina, is about 110 km away and 2 to 2.5 hours by road. As a lighter day, walk Margalla Trail 5 from near F-5 in daylight with a group, and check the day’s trail notices on the CDA adventure page .
Where to stay
Islamabad Serena Hotel stands on Khayaban-e-Suhrawardy. Compare other stays on Booking.com .
Islamabad to Lahore
The M-2 motorway links the two cities, and the drive takes roughly 4 to 5 hours. Lahore is in Punjab, which the FCDO does not name.
Longer routes in the north
The Karakoram Highway to Gilgit and Hunza passes through sections the FCDO advises against all travel on, between Mansehra and Chilas. Swat is also on the do-not-travel list. Neither is an easy extension to a stay in Islamabad.
An overnight in the Galliyat hills, such as at Nathia Gali, means Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which the US flags. Snow and landslides bring seasonal entry bans, the most recent in February 2026. Treat it as a plan that depends on conditions and the advisories.
Practical points
Most visitors need a paid e-Visa from visa.nadra.gov.pk , because the free Visa Prior to Arrival scheme has been suspended since January 2026. Processing is quoted at 7 to 20 working days. Budget in PKR. The Metrobus costs PKR 100 per trip on the main routes, and Careem, Yango and inDrive operate in the city.
