Multi Day Stays Around Garni
Travel advice, as of October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Garni and the rest of Kotayk Province are outside both. The latest notices are on gov.uk and travel.state.gov.
Garni Is a Day Trip First
Garni has no organised multi-day programme. The temple, the Symphony of the Stones and Geghard fit comfortably into one day from Yerevan, which is 25 to 30 km away and 40 to 50 minutes by road. Visitors who want more time build it from an overnight stay and a second day of walking, rather than from a set itinerary.
Overnight in a Garni Guesthouse
Several guesthouses in and around the village take bookings through accommodation sites. An evening stay lets you see the temple late in the day, since the museum-reserve is open until about 21:30, then visit Geghard the next morning. Ask your host about a lavash baking demonstration, which some guesthouses arrange. Compare current rooms, prices and cancellation terms on Booking.com .
Khosrov Reserve and Havuts Tar
Hikers can turn Garni into a two-day stay with the Khosrov Forest State Reserve. The reserve is an IUCN Category Ia area of 232 km2, founded in the 4th century by King Khosrov III and a state reserve since 1958. Visits follow set routes with trained rangers, and operators include the permit in their price. Register at the guardhouse on the way to Havuts Tar, pay the reserve fee and go with a ranger or guide.
Persian leopard, bezoar goat and brown bear are recorded in the reserve, so keep to registered routes. The best months are September to May. Havuts Tar is a half-day hike of 5 to 7 km each way, so a ranger-led Khosrov route is a separate full day from a Havuts Tar walk.
Pairing Garni with Other Stops
Yerevan is the usual base, and many visitors stay there and return to Garni for a day. Etchmiadzin is another pairing: its treasury holds the Holy Lance, in a case of 1687 in the museum there. For a longer route, combine the sights covered in the other guides for this region and keep each day to one area, because bus service from Garni is sparse.
Planning Tips
- A taxi is the practical link between Garni and Geghard when buses do not line up.
- Buses 266 and 284 leave Yerevan’s Gai station, with only a few departures a day.
- Carry Armenian dram (AMD) in cash for taxis, parking and village cafes.
- Temple tickets cost 1,500 AMD for adults and 750 AMD for children, pensioners and students.
