Guided Attraction Tours in Tunisia
Advice dated 31 October 2026. The UK FCDO (last updated 24 July 2026) tells travellers not to go to Chaambi Mountains National Park, the military zones around Mount Salloum, Mount Sammamma and Mount Mghila, and the Libyan border belt, and to avoid all but essential travel to Kasserine Governorate and parts of the Algerian border. The US State Department rates Tunisia Level 2. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice before booking; some border and military areas are closed to tourists.
How guided sightseeing works
Most visitors use one of three formats: a private car and guide from Tunis, a small-group day tour, or a licensed site guide hired at the gate. Travelling against FCDO advice can void travel insurance, so ask any operator to confirm the route before you pay and keep to the circuit below.
Carthage and Sidi Bou Said from Tunis
The standard product is a half day of about four hours or a full day of seven to eight hours with a licensed guide who speaks English, French or German. A typical day runs from hotel pickup to the Antonine Baths and Byrsa Hill at Carthage, then a clifftop walk and mint tea in Sidi Bou Said, then an afternoon at the Bardo National Museum or the Tunis medina. Private tours are priced per car and small-group tours per person, and both vary by operator, so treat any figure as indicative.
Carthage uses one combined ticket for its scattered sites, at around 30 TND from April 2026, rising in January 2027. Check at the gate, since the heritage fee schedule changed on 1 April 2026. The Bardo is closed on Mondays. A combined Bardo and Carthage ticket was set at 45 TND from April 2026 and 70 TND from January 2027. Tours often leave entry fees out of the price, so ask.
Dougga and Bulla Regia
Dougga is the best-preserved Roman small town in the country, about 105 km south-west of Tunis near Teboursouk. Reaching it by public transport means several louage changes, so a private day tour is the easy option for visitors without a car. Tours usually add Bulla Regia, where the Roman villas have rooms built underground to escape the summer heat. The Capitolium, the theatre and the Libyco-Punic mausoleum are the stops to ask your guide about.
Hiring a site guide
At Carthage, Dougga and El Jem, licensed freelance guides wait near the ticket gates. A 90-minute to two-hour private walk through the ruins is typically priced in the tens of dinars. Check for the official badge, agree the language and the total price before you start, and pay in dinars.
Southern desert circuits
Two- and three-day loops from Djerba or Tozeur link Matmata, where Hotel Sidi Driss is a basic cave hotel, with Douz, the Chott el Djerid causeway, the Tozeur palm groves and the Tataouine ksour at Ksar Ouled Soltane and Chenini. Go only with a licensed operator and its own driver. Summer heat is severe, so winter and the shoulder months suit these routes best.
The mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides sit near the Algerian frontier. Mides lies on the border line, and parts of the area may fall inside the FCDO essential-travel band. Look at the live advice map before you commit, and go only with a licensed Tozeur operator. Chebika is further from the border than the other two. Do not add Sbeitla, which is in Kasserine Governorate, to any itinerary.
Practical points
Pay for tours and tips in Tunisian dinars. Carry a bank card, exchange cash on arrival and keep your slips. Dress modestly at mosque sites.
