Day Hikes from Namche and Dingboche
Day trips in the Khumbu
A day trip from Kathmandu into the Khumbu is not possible on foot, because the trailheads sit beyond Lukla and nothing in the park is reached by road. What the region does offer is a set of day hikes from a village where you are already staying, and a helicopter or flight option from Kathmandu. These hikes double as acclimatisation outings, so they are worth doing even if you feel strong.
From Namche Bazaar (about 3,440 m)
- Hotel Everest View and Khumjung. A loop up from Namche to Syangboche (about 3,880 m) and across to Khumjung usually takes about 4 to 5 hours. The hotel terrace looks across to Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, and Khumjung is a stone-walled village with a monastery. Check that the hotel is open for visitors before you plan a stop.
- Thame. The valley walk from Namche to Thame follows the old trade route.
From Dingboche (about 4,410 m)
- Nagarjun Hill. The hill above Dingboche reaches about 5,050 m and makes a good acclimatisation climb. Go up, then come back down to sleep in Dingboche.
- Toward Chhukung. The valley path continues toward Chhukung and can be walked as far as you like before turning back.
What cannot be a day trip
Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar and Gokyo are each a multi-day walk from Lukla and cannot be done in a day from Lukla or Kathmandu. Anyone who is told otherwise should walk away from that offer. The Khumbu Icefall is only for permitted climbing expeditions and is never a tourist outing.
Flights from Kathmandu
A helicopter or fixed-wing sightseeing flight over the Everest region is a real short option from Kathmandu, and it is the nearest thing to a day trip. Operators and prices change, so compare several and read what is included. Flights depend on weather, and a flight is not a substitute for the trek.
Altitude rules for day hikes
Day hikes follow the rule of climb high, sleep low. Spend your nights at the village you started from, and keep the gain in your sleeping height above 3,000 m to about 300 to 500 m a day. Stop and go down if a headache, nausea or confusion appears. A licensed guide is recommended, and national rules expect one for trekkers in the park.
Costs
You still need the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu municipal permit (about NPR 3,000 for most foreigners) and park entry (roughly NPR 3,000 to 3,400), so confirm both on arrival.
