Day Trips from Ohrid by Road and Boat
Ohrid works as a base for several short trips on the lake shore and into the hills. Distances below are by road and fees are in Macedonian denars (MKD), at about 61.5 MKD to the euro. Fees are small, but they change, so carry cash and check on the day.
St Naum monastery
St Naum is about 29 km south of Ohrid and was founded in 905. It is a working monastery beside the Black Drim springs and a beach, and it lies about 1 km from the Albanian border, so bring a passport if you plan to cross. The church costs about 100 MKD. The beach has changing shacks, and a rowboat ride at the springs costs about 600 MKD per boat. You can get there by lake boat in about 90 minutes or by public bus in about an hour. Boat times and prices are on Sailing Stone Travel .
Bay of Bones
The reconstructed Bronze Age pile dwelling at the Bay of Bones is about 14 to 16 km south of Ohrid, on the way to St Naum. Entry is about 100 to 150 MKD. Combine it with St Naum in one trip, or stop on the boat run.
Vevcani
Vevcani is a village with springs, about 14 km from Struga and roughly 20 to 25 km from Ohrid. Entry to the springs has been reported at about 50 MKD, and some listings call it free. The village holds a carnival on 13 and 14 January.
Galicica National Park
The park road climbs the ridge between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, with viewpoints over both lakes near the Pretor and Magaro pass. Fees vary by source. One guide gives 200 MKD per person for stays and a small vehicle fee for just driving through, and there is no staffed booth on the Prespa side. Bring cash.
Struga
Struga lies about 14 km northwest of Ohrid, where the Black Drim flows out of the lake under a bridge in the town. The Poetry Evenings festival is held there in late summer.
Skopje is not a day trip
Skopje is about 170 km from Ohrid, around 3 to 3.5 hours by bus each way. Buses cost about 460 to 490 MKD one way on aggregator sites, and several operators run the route from different stations. A round trip in one day leaves little time at either end, so plan an overnight instead.
Tips for all the trips
Autumn and winter hours are shorter than summer ones, so leave early and check closing times. Opening hours for the main sites are collected on Tourism Attractions .
