Ohrid with Kids: Beaches and Peacocks
Ohrid is a gentle place to bring children, though the family offer is modest and built around nature rather than attractions. You get a lake, a few beaches, some reconstructed huts to walk through and a monastery garden with peacocks. Fees are in Macedonian denars (MKD), at about 61.5 MKD to the euro.
Beach days
Gradiste is a pebble beach with loungers and cafes, and Labino and the beach beside St Naum are other usual choices. Swimming season is about late June to mid-September, when the surface water is roughly 22 to 24 C. The shore is pebbly and the bottom drops off steeply, and most free beaches have no reliable lifeguard. Keep children within arm’s reach, use water shoes on the stones and agree on a spot where nobody swims beyond standing depth.
The Bay of Bones huts
The Bay of Bones is a reconstructed Bronze Age pile dwelling over the lake, about 14 to 16 km south of Ohrid. Children can walk the platform and the huts, and see the Roman-period fortress and the indoor museum on the shore at Gradiste. Entry is about 100 to 150 MKD. Outside summer, opening hours are shorter and the museum is reported closed on Mondays, so check before the drive.
Peacocks at St Naum
Peacocks walk through the grounds of St Naum, about 29 km south of Ohrid. The monastery is a working one, so explain to children that voices stay low there. The beach next to it has changing shacks, which helps after a swim. At the Black Drim springs a rowboat ride of about 30 minutes costs about 600 MKD per boat, shared between the passengers, and it is an easy outing for school-age children.
Boat trip logistics
The lake boat from the Ohrid pier to St Naum takes about 90 minutes each way and costs about EUR 10 round trip on the large boats. That is a long time for toddlers on a hot day. Bring snacks, hats and a plan for naps. A public bus takes about an hour, but it has few departures. Details of the boat run are on Sailing Stone Travel .
Easy evenings in town
Churches in the Old Town are places of worship, so visit them briefly and quietly with children, and leave the longer museum stops for school-age children. Opening hours across town are on Tourism Attractions .
Time of year
July and August are the best months for swimming. Outside the swimming season, the huts, the springs and the peacocks still make a good day out.
