Sightseeing in Puerto Ayora
Most sightseeing in Puerto Ayora happens on foot around Academy Bay, with a few stops further out on Santa Cruz Island. The core sights are the research station, the waterfront and the beaches. The highlands add craters and lava tunnels. Everything is priced in US dollars, so carry cash.
Charles Darwin Research Station
The station is open daily from 08:00 to 18:00, including holidays, and the exhibition hall is free. Inside are natural history collections and whale skeletons, and the giant tortoise breeding programme has run here since 1965. It sits at the east end of the Avenida Charles Darwin.
Lonesome George
Beside the station, the Fausto Llerena Breeding Center is a separate Park Directorate site, reached on the guided Tortoise Route (08:00 to 16:45, about USD 10 with a guide). Along the tortoise trail is a dedicated exhibit room called Symbol of Hope. It displays the preserved remains of Lonesome George, the last known Pinta Island tortoise, who died on 24 June 2012. His remains returned to Santa Cruz in 2017 after preservation in New York. The room is a quiet and respectful place, and the same 2 m rule applies to the living tortoises nearby.
The waterfront and the fish market
Avenida Charles Darwin follows the harbour from the municipal pier to the station. The Pelican Bay fish market (Mercado de Mariscos) is an open-air market where fishermen fillet the catch, with pelicans and sea lions gathering close by. Hours vary, so check before you go.
Tortuga Bay
The first beach, Playa Brava, has surf and marine iguanas. It is for looking only, because rip currents make swimming unsafe. Playa Mansa is the sheltered bay about 20 minutes further along the beach. Walk the paved path of about 2.5 km from the edge of town (30 to 45 minutes) and sign in and out at the park booth. Visiting hours are about 06:00 to 18:00, and the park can close the beach if the sea is rough.
Highlands sights
El Chato and Rancho Primicias are side by side on the road to Santa Rosa, 30 to 45 minutes from town. You can walk among wild giant tortoises and through lava tunnels, at about USD 10 with a guide. They are open roughly 08:00 to 17:30. Los Gemelos, the twin craters, sit beside the highway.
Plan your day
A simple order is the station and breeding center in the morning, a walk along the waterfront at midday and Tortuga Bay in the afternoon. Keep the highlands for another day, since the round trip takes 1 to 1.5 hours of driving.
Tips that apply everywhere:
- Stay at least 2 m from wildlife, and do not touch or feed animals.
- Do not use flash.
- Check current government advice before you travel. The islands sit outside the mainland areas named in UK advice for Ecuador .
