Walking the Nessebar Peninsula
Old Nessebar is small enough to walk end to end, and walking is the only practical way to see it. The peninsula is closed to ordinary traffic, the lanes are cobbled, and the main sights sit within a few minutes of each other. Allow 2 to 3 hours for a loop that includes a few entries, and longer if you take your time in the museums. Prices are in euros.
Before you start
- Shoes: cobbles are uneven and slippery when wet, so wear flat shoes with grip.
- Tickets: buy combined tickets at the Archaeological Museum desk, 2A Mesembria Street, just past the town gate.
- Cars: driving onto the peninsula needs a permit arranged in advance through your accommodation, and you have one hour to unload. Most visitors park at Parking North on Kraybrezhna Street, about 1.50 euros per hour or about 7.50 euros for up to 24 hours. Wheel clamps are used, so park only in marked bays.
- Buses: public bus line 1 from Sunny Beach, on the summer schedule from early June, takes about 15 minutes and costs around 1 euro in cash.
The peninsula loop
- Windmill and Western Gate. Start at the wooden windmill at the entrance, then pass through the western walls and gate, which are free to see.
- Archaeological Museum. It is just past the gate, and a good first stop for Greek ceramics and Thracian gold.
- The old centre. Walk through the lanes of revival-era houses. The Ethnographic Museum, in a merchant house in the Moskoyani House area, shows a revival-era merchant house inside.
- St Sophia ruins. The 5th to 6th century basilica, also called the Old Bishopric, is free to see.
- St Stephen. Step inside to see the wall paintings dated 1599.
- St John Aliturgetos terrace. Finish on the southern cliff, where the 14th century church of red and white masonry can be seen from outside, with sea views beyond.
Christ Pantocrator can only be admired from outside. It has been closed for conservation since 2022, and its brick and ceramic exterior can be seen from beyond the fence.
Timing and hours
From 2 June to 14 September, the museum and St Stephen open 9:00 to 19:00, while small churches and the windmill open roughly 10:30 to 14:00 and 14:30 to 19:00. The small churches close for lunch between about 14:00 and 14:30. From mid-October to the end of March, the museum and St Stephen close earlier, about 17:00, most restaurants are shut, and small churches open by arrangement only.
Guided walks
Check current listings for free or guided walking tours, since offers change from season to season. An audio guide tour that includes a winery visit is listed by resellers.
Respect at the churches
The church of the Mother of God is a working church, usually open 8:00 to 19:00. Dress modestly there and keep quiet during services.
