Jūrmala Walks: Jomas Iela, Dunes, Bog
Walking in Jūrmala
The terrain is flat, the air is salty and the routes are mostly self-guided, with a wooden villa around every corner. The only regular guided walk is the Sunday centre walk from the tourist office, listed below. Because the city is a ribbon of settlements, pick one district per walk and use the Vivi train to move between them.
Majori to Dzintari Loop
This loop is about 3.5 km. Start at Majori station and walk east along the pedestrian Jomas iela. Pass the Turtle sculpture and a beach exit, and carry on to Dzintari Concert Hall (Turaidas iela 1) and Dzintari Forest Park, where the viewing tower is free during park hours. Add the Morbergs summer-house complex (Dzintaru prospekts 52/54) from the street. Finish at Dzintari station.
Dubulti Walk
From Dubulti station you can visit Art Station Dubulti, which is a gallery inside the station building. Aspazija’s House (Z. Meierovica prospekts 18/20) is about 5 minutes away on foot. Its main exhibition is closed for building works from September 2026, but the house, the garden sculpture and events may still run. Then walk to Dubulti Lutheran Church (Baznīcas iela 13) and on to the seafront. A labelled wellness trail runs through the dunes there.
Buļļuciems Dune Walk
Walk through the Ragakāpa dune trails and along the Lielupe mouth, then stop at the Jūrmala Open-Air Museum (Tīklu iela 1A), which is free and closed on Mondays. The marked trails use boardwalks and add up to a few kilometres. The dune itself is about 17 m high, the highest point in the city.
Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk
Take the train to Ķemeri, then walk roughly 3.5 to 4 km to the start, or go by taxi or bike. The boardwalk is free and open all year. The short loop is about 1.5 km and the long loop about 3.4 to 3.7 km, ending at a platform over the bog pools. It is at its best in the morning or in autumn colour. Planks are slippery in the rain, snow is not cleared and there are no rails. Stay on the boardwalk, and join a guided bog-shoe tour if you want to walk on the bog itself. More details are on redzet.lv .
Ķemeri Resort Park
The restored historic park holds the water tower and a spring pavilion. The tower platforms open in the warm season only, from about late April to late October.
The Sunday Walk and Printed Guides
The Jūrmala tourist information centre (Lienes iela 5, Majori) lists a walk through Majori and Dzintari on Sundays at 12:00. It runs when at least 4 people join, and it asks for a donation of about EUR 10 for adults and EUR 5 for children, in cash. Visit Jūrmala publishes a Wooden Architecture Guide with route maps for the whole city. Occasional tip-based walks may also appear on guide platforms.
Safety Notes
Winter ice on the sea and the Lielupe is thin and unsafe, so keep to the shore. Wear shoes with grip on boardwalks.
