Day Trips from Kampala and Entebbe, Uganda
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: the US State Department rates Uganda Level 4, Do Not Travel, after raising it in May 2026 during an Ebola outbreak that ended in Uganda in late August 2026; crime, terrorism and unrest are cited as well. The UK FCDO says attacks are very likely, including in national parks, and advises against travel outside main towns after dark, apart from the Kampala to Entebbe airport road. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal under Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023. Read the FCDO safety page and the US advisory before you plan.
What Fits in a Day
Uganda is large and roads are slow, so only a few places work as a day trip. The ones below are within a long day of Kampala or Entebbe, or are close to Jinja or Fort Portal. Daylight driving only, and plan to be back at your base before dark.
From Entebbe or Kampala
- Mabamba Bay: a shoebill morning by canoe with a licensed guide. It is about an hour’s drive from Entebbe and 1.5 to 2 hours from Kampala. Full-day packages typically cost USD 80 to 200.
- Ngamba Island: a half or full day with the chimpanzees. Boats leave Entebbe at 09:00 and 12:45, and you book ahead through the Chimpanzee Trust at chimpanzeetrust.org .
- Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe: open daily from about 08:00 to 18:00, with non-resident tickets around USD 15 for adults and USD 10 for children. Pair it with the Entebbe Botanical Gardens by the lake.
- Equator stop and Mpambire: the Equator monument at Kayabwe sits on the Kampala to Masaka road. Mpambire, a royal drum-making village in Mpigi, is nearby; fees vary, so go in daylight.
- Ssezibwa Falls: a Baganda spiritual site in Mukono District, off the Jinja road.
- Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: foot tracking with an armed ranger, about three hours each way from Kampala, so this is a very long day.
From Jinja
Jinja is a base for white-water rafting with operators such as Adrift, bungee at Adrift’s tower in Kangulumira and boat trips to the Source of the Nile. The source is where the river leaves Lake Victoria; it is a quiet spot rather than a waterfall. Bujagali Falls were drowned by the dam and cannot be visited. Mabira Forest Reserve lies roughly 25 km west of Jinja. Allow 2 to 4 hours by road from Kampala to Jinja, depending on traffic.
From Fort Portal
Kibale chimpanzee tracking is about 26 to 35 km south of Fort Portal. The permit is about USD 250 for foreign non-residents, with a minimum age of 12. The community-run Bigodi Wetland walk is also close, along with the Ndali-Kasenda crater lakes. Semuliki National Park and the Sempaya hot springs lie near the Congo border, and the western-border caution applies there.
Trips That Need More Than a Day
Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Kidepo and the Rwenzori Mountains are multi-day trips. Rough driving times from Kampala are 5 to 6.5 hours to Murchison (Paraa), 5 to 6 to Fort Portal, 6.5 to 8 to Mweya in Queen Elizabeth and 8 to 10 to Bwindi, with 2 to 3 hours of that on unpaved mountain road. Rushing them in a day leaves little time at the destination. Bush flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi reach Kihihi, Kisoro, Pakuba, Kasese, Mweya and Apoka; confirm schedules with Aerolink Uganda.
Practical Tips
The Entebbe to Kampala expressway takes about 35 to 45 minutes, and the older road can take 2 to 3.5 hours in traffic. FCDO does not recommend matatus or boda-bodas, so hire a driver or join an organised trip. Pay park fees in US dollars or by card, and carry shillings for small purchases.
