A romantic trip, in mountain terms The Khumbu is a place for couples who want to earn their views together. It is a hard trek at altitude, not a resort. There are no roads, no spas and no water activities, and the romance lies in a shared goal, a sunrise and a warm lodge at the end of a long day. If you want a pool and a massage, this is the wrong region.

Day trips in the Khumbu A day trip from Kathmandu into the Khumbu is not possible on foot, because the trailheads sit beyond Lukla and nothing in the park is reached by road. What the region does offer is a set of day hikes from a village where you are already staying, and a helicopter or flight option from Kathmandu. These hikes double as acclimatisation outings, so they are worth doing even if you feel strong.

Attraction visits in the Khumbu Attraction tours in the usual sense, with a coach, a guide and a ticket booth, are not part of the Khumbu. No road enters Sagarmatha National Park, so every sight is reached on foot as part of a trek, and the short list of real attractions is mostly monasteries and villages. This page covers each one and how it fits into a walking route. Tengboche Monastery Tengboche Monastery, also called Dawa Choling Gompa, stands at about 3,867 m with Ama Dablam behind it.

Multi-day treks in the Khumbu The Khumbu is trekking country, and multi-day teahouse treks are what most visitors come for. No road enters Sagarmatha National Park, so each route is walked from Lukla, with porters and yaks moving the baggage. Three routes cover most plans, and peak climbs are an add-on for experienced people. All treks cross 3,000 m, so altitude rules shape every itinerary. Everest Base Camp trek This is the headline route and commonly takes 12 to 14 days from Lukla (about 2,840 m).

Sightseeing in Sagarmatha National Park Sagarmatha National Park, the Khumbu region of Nepal, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to Everest (8,848.86 m). Sightseeing here means mountain viewpoints, monasteries and Sherpa villages, all reached on foot, because no road enters the park. Most sights lie along the Everest Base Camp route or the Gokyo route. Mountain viewpoints Kala Patthar (about 5,644 m) gives the best-known panorama of Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse at sunrise.

Walking in the Khumbu villages In the Khumbu every tour is a walking tour, because no road or vehicle enters Sagarmatha National Park. Beyond the long treks there are short village walks that can fill a rest day, and they work best when led by a licensed guide who knows the paths and the altitude. This page covers four of them. All start at or above Namche Bazaar (about 3,440 m).

Family travel in the Khumbu The Khumbu is a trekking region, not a family resort. There are no roads, rides or theme parks, and every outing is a walk at altitude. That does not rule out a family trip, but it limits the options to short, low stays, and it makes planning the main job. Speak to a doctor who knows high altitude before bringing young children. Where families can go Keep to the lower end of the valley, between Lukla (about 2,840 m) and Namche Bazaar (about 3,440 m), and the villages of Khumjung and Khunde nearby.

Things to do in the Khumbu Sagarmatha National Park, the Khumbu region of Solukhumbu District in eastern Nepal, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and covers about 1,148 square kilometres. No road enters the park. Every activity here starts on foot from Lukla, with porters and yaks carrying the loads, so the trek itself is the main thing to do and the sights are strung along it.
