Kathmandu is a city that would be exhausting to navigate without any help and exhilarating once you stop fighting it. The traffic is bad, the dust from unpaved side roads is pervasive, sacred cows and motorcycles share lanes of the same width, and the UNESCO-listed temples sit immediately adjacent to hardware stores and mobile phone repair kiosks. This is not a defect to be managed around; it is the texture of the place.

Five days is the sweet spot for Kathmandu, long enough to include Bhaktapur properly instead of skipping it, which is what most generic itineraries do because they run out of days. Kathmandu sits at 1,400 meters, which is not high enough to cause real altitude sickness but is high enough that plenty of visitors feel oddly winded on their first day and blame it on jet lag instead. Also worth knowing before you land: the valley’s UNESCO listing covers seven separate monument zones, not one shared heritage designation, and each has its own ticket booth and its own fee, a detail that trips up more first-time visitors than you’d expect when they assume one ticket covers the lot.

Kathmandu has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a 20-kilometre radius of the old city, which is either a remarkable concentration of ancient religious architecture or an overwhelming list depending on how you approach it. Three days is enough to see the most important ones without turning the trip into a checklist. Choose depth over coverage: the Boudhanath stupa and Pashupatinath temple each reward an hour more than most visitors give them.

Two days in Kathmandu is not enough to do Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, Patan, and both major stupas, and any itinerary that tries to sell you that combo is setting you up for a sprint, not a trip.
