Day Trips Beyond Pokhara Valley
Sarangkot, Tal Barahi, Davis Falls and the International Mountain Museum sit inside Pokhara city limits, 10 to 25 minutes from Lakeside; they belong on a sightseeing itinerary, not a day trip list. The four below actually take you out of the valley.
Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake
Fifteen kilometers east, these sister lakes see none of Phewa’s boat traffic. Rent a traditional wooden rowboat for NPR 400-500 an hour and glide across still water surrounded by forested hills, then eat grilled lake fish (mahseer or tilapia) with spicy chutney at a waterside eatery. A local bus from Prithvi Chowk takes about an hour for NPR 50; a taxi from Lakeside is 35 minutes and NPR 1,200-1,500 round trip.
Australian Camp and Dhampus
The classic Annapurna foothill day hike. A taxi from Lakeside to Kande takes 45 minutes (around NPR 1,500), then it is a steep 1.5-2 hour climb through rhododendron forest to Australian Camp at 2,060m, with close-up views of Annapurna South and Machapuchare. From there a gentler ridge trail leads down to the stone village of Dhampus (1,700m) for a Thakali lunch, then stone stairways down to Phedi for a taxi back. This route sits inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, so it requires an ACAP permit (NPR 3,000, issued through the Nepal Tourism Board ) and, past the designated checkpoint zones, a licensed guide. Kushma and the Kali Gandaki bungy
About 1.5 hours west along the Baglung Highway, in Parbat District. The Cliff Nepal operates here: a 228-meter canyon bungy, the world’s second-highest, suspended from a 520-meter pedestrian bridge over the Kali Gandaki gorge, plus a tandem canyon swing and a mechanical sky-cycle. Bandipur
A well-preserved 18th-century Newari trading town at 1,030m, 2.5 hours east, with pedestrian-only stone streets, ornate wooden townhouses, and views toward the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges. It works as a long day trip, but an overnight stop between Kathmandu and Pokhara makes better use of the town’s stone-paved lanes and silk-farm history than a rushed afternoon does.
Getting there and back
All four routes leave the flat lakeside geography behind, so build in an extra hour of buffer versus what a map suggests; mountain roads here are slow even when short. Fix a taxi fare before boarding; drivers here do not run meters, and prices for Kande and Kushma routes should be agreed in NPR before the vehicle moves.
