Pokhara Sightseeing, Sunrise to Sunset
Pokhara’s sights cluster into two kinds: what you climb toward before dawn, and what you find in the streets and caves of the valley floor. Both are worth building a full day around.
Sarangkot at sunrise
Leave Lakeside by 05:00 in summer or 05:45 in winter to reach the Sarangkot viewing towers at 1,600m, or ride the Annapurna Cable Car up instead; paragliding launch windows from the same ridge are set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal if you plan to combine the two. The payoff is the first light striking Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna South, Annapurna I, and the fishtail peak of Machapuchare (6,993m) in sequence, turning each summit gold. World Peace Pagoda and Pumdikot Shiva
The brilliant white Shanti Stupa sits at 1,100m on Anadu Hill, south of Phewa Lake, built by the Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist order with four gilded statues depicting the Buddha’s life. Admission is free; reach it by wooden boat across the lake followed by a 45-minute uphill walk through Raniban forest, or a 25-minute taxi via Chhorepatan. Higher still, at 1,500m, the Pumdikot Shiva statue stands 51 feet tall, surrounded by 108 miniature lingams, with a full 360-degree view over the valley and the Annapurnas.
Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave
Across the street from each other in Chhorepatan: Davis Falls (Patale Chhango), where the Pardi Khola river vanishes into a limestone chasm, and Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, a spiral stairway down to a naturally formed Shiva lingam and a humid tunnel leading to a viewing balcony beneath the falls themselves. Entry to each runs NPR 100 for foreign visitors. During the June-through-September monsoon, water levels surge and the lower cave walkway is regularly closed; do not step past marked safety railings even when it is open, since the wet limestone is coated in algae.
Bindhyabasini Temple
An 18th-century pagoda dedicated to Goddess Durga (as Bhagwati), on a hillock in Miruwa, in the old northern quarter of the city. It is not on an island; the island temple in Phewa Lake, reached by paddleboat, is Tal Barahi, a separate two-tiered pagoda dedicated to Durga in her form as Varahi.
Seti River Gorge
The Seti Gandaki has carved a near-invisible limestone chasm straight through the city, over 50 meters deep in places while narrowing to just a few feet across. Building the day
Sarangkot at dawn, breakfast back in Lakeside, then Shanti Stupa or the Davis Falls and Gupteshwor pair in the afternoon, is a workable rhythm without rushing any one stop.
