Pokhara Adventure Sports, by the Numbers
Pokhara markets itself as Nepal’s adventure capital, and the claim holds up once you look at what actually launches, floats, and drops from its ridges and rivers. The activities below are the ones with real operators, real prices, and real safety rules behind them, most of which the Nepal Tourism Board lists as regulated adventure sports.
Tandem paragliding from Sarangkot
Gliders launch from the 1,600-meter ridges of Sarangkot, Toripani, or Mandredhunga, ride thermals over forested valleys, and spiral down to a landing field beside Phewa Lake. A standard 20-25 minute tandem flight runs NPR 8,000-10,000 (roughly $60-80), usually including transport and a GoPro package. All commercial flights operate under Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) corridor rules, and pilots should carry Nepal Airsports Association certification; ask to see it before you strap in. Check paragliding options on GetYourGuide .
Upper Seti whitewater rafting
A half-day Grade III-IV run starts at Hemja, about 30 minutes north of Lakeside, and finishes near the Phulbari/Seti dam. The river is glacial meltwater off Machapuchare and Annapurna, so it stays cold (10-14°C) year-round even in summer; neoprene wetsuits are part of the standard kit, not an optional upgrade. Cost is typically NPR 5,000-6,500 including transfers, gear, and a river lunch. Search rafting day trips near Pokhara on Viator .
Bungy and zipline at Hemja
HighGround Adventures runs a purpose-built adventure hub in the Yamdi Khola gorge at Hemja: a cantilever bungy jump of 70-80 meters over an artificial pond (around NPR 6,000-7,500), and the ZipFlyer, a 1.8-kilometer line with a 56-degree initial drop and speeds over 120 km/h (around NPR 8,000). Details and current schedules are on HighGround’s own site .
Ultralight and mountain flights
Avia Club Nepal flies open-cockpit and enclosed light sport aircraft out of Pokhara Airport, past the Sarangkot ridgeline and up toward the Annapurna snowfields. A 15-minute valley circuit costs around $110; a full 1-hour alpine flight runs closer to $300. These are separate from the tandem paragliding operators and from the ultralight corridors CAAN regulates; check caanepal.gov.np for current airspace notices before booking around a specific date.
Mountain biking
Downhill routes drop from Sarangkot to Lakeside via Naudanda, and flatter cross-country loops circle the quieter shores of Begnas and Rupa Lakes. Hardtail and full-suspension rentals run NPR 1,200-2,500 per day from Lakeside bike shops; check brakes and tire pressure before committing to the Sarangkot descent, which is steep and loose in places.
Timing and season
Autumn (late September through November) gives the clearest skies for both paragliding and mountain flights. Monsoon (June-August) grounds most aerial activity and turns the Upper Seti into a faster, higher-volume run, best left to operators with strong local river reading. For where to sleep between activities, compare Lakeside hotels on Agoda , and for the multi-day treks these day activities often lead into, see the multi-day trekking guide .
Before you go
Cash is required for most operators; carry NPR in small notes rather than relying on card machines, which add a 3.5-4% surcharge when they work at all.
