Kathmandu's Best Viewpoints and Sights
Mount Everest sits over 160km east-northeast of Kathmandu, hidden behind the Langtang, Jugal and Rolwaling ranges, so no street-level view of the valley floor shows it. Three routes actually get you a Himalayan skyline, and they trade time, altitude and cost against each other.
Nagarkot, the classic ridge view
At 2,195m on the valley’s eastern rim, Nagarkot delivers the most complete panorama reachable from Kathmandu: on a clear October to April morning it runs from the Annapurnas in the west past Manaslu, Langtang Lirung and Shishapangma to a distant Everest in the east. The drive up from Bhaktapur takes 1.5 to 2 hours; for sunrise, leave Thamel by 4:00 am. An Austrian-built Doppelmayr gondola out of Thankot climbs 1,000 vertical meters in 10 minutes to a 2,551m summit with Bhaleshwor Mahadev temple and a 360-degree deck; on a clear winter morning, Everest is occasionally visible as a small distant peak. Narayanhiti Palace Museum
The former royal residence, converted to a public museum after the monarchy’s abolition in 2008, sits a 10-minute walk from Thamel on Durbar Marg. It holds 52 state rooms and the preserved site of the June 2001 royal massacre. Open Thursday to Monday, 10:30 am to 2:30 pm; closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
