Walking Old San Juan: Walls and Plazas
Old San Juan is a walking city, and most of its sights can be seen on foot without a guide. A guided walk adds context, and two operators run history and mural routes. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones, and carry water and sun protection. Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.
Getting to the start
The Tren Urbano does not reach Old San Juan. It stops at Sagrado Corazón, and a bus or taxi covers the last leg. Free trolleys have been reported as not running, so do not plan around them. If you drive, there is underground parking at the end of Calle Norzagaray in Fifth Centennial Plaza, followed by a 5 to 10 minute walk. No vehicles are allowed on the El Morro grounds.
A self-guided route
The Paseo de la Princesa runs about 300 metres along the south wall and ends at the Raíces Fountain beside the Puerta de San Juan. It is free and open at any hour. From there, walk up to Calle del Cristo and the Catedral de San Juan Bautista at numbers 151 to 153, an active church where you should cover shoulders and knees. Plaza de Armas and Plaza Colón are public squares along the way.
Walking the walls to the forts
The forts are just under a mile apart, 15 to 20 minutes on foot along the wall. The walls and the Paseo cost nothing, and the $10 ticket is only for going inside El Morro and San Cristóbal. It covers both forts for 24 hours for ages 16 and over, with children 15 and under free, card only, and the forts are open from 9am to 5pm. The lawn in front of El Morro is closed for turf replacement, so check the National Park Service FAQ for the latest. During the San Sebastián Street Festival in mid-January, El Morro and the north walls close from 7pm to 5am each night.
Guided walks
Flavors Food Tours at 206 Calle Tetuán offers a 2-hour history walk, a food tour with up to five stops, a Rum Runners cocktail tour and a guided El Morro tour that meets outside El Convento Hotel. Prices are on its booking page at sanjuanfoodtours.com . In Santurce, The Art Walk Puerto Rico leads a guided mural walk of about 90 minutes along Calle Cerra. No 2026 festival date has been found for the mural festival, so go for the murals themselves.
Beaches are for walking
Condado and Ocean Park have dangerous rip currents, and tourists were swept out in March and April 2026. Walking the sand is fine, but swim only at a lifeguarded beach such as Balneario de Escambrón and check the flag.
