San Juan Day Trips: El Yunque and Fajardo
Most day trips from San Juan head east to the rainforest and the Fajardo coast, or south into the central mountains. Hire a car for flexibility, since public transport does not reach most of these places. Prices are in US dollars, and Atlantic hurricane season (1 June to 30 November) can cancel boat days at short notice.
El Yunque National Forest
El Yunque is about an hour from San Juan by road, longer in traffic. The PR-191 corridor has no entrance fee and no reservation, and parking fills early, so aim for the 8am opening. There is no public transit, and rideshare pick-ups from El Portal and La Coca are unreliable, so arrange your return before you go. El Portal Rainforest Center charges $8 for ages 16 and over. La Mina Trail and La Mina Falls, the Big Tree Trail and the climb to the summit are closed, and La Coca Falls and Mt. Britton Tower have mixed reports, so check the Forest Service page that morning. Juan Diego Falls and the Angelito swimming hole are open per 2026 reports. Leave any river that turns brown or starts to rise.
Fajardo and the bioluminescent bay
Laguna Grande sits about 1 to 1 hour 10 minutes from San Juan. Guided kayak tours run about 2 hours from Las Croabas, with Kayaking Puerto Rico listing prices from $70 and a minimum age of 6. Swimming is not allowed, and the darkest nights near the new moon are best. East Island Excursions runs boat days of about 6 hours from Fajardo to Icacos, Culebra and Vieques, priced from about $110 to $170, so check the current menu.
Culebra and Vieques
Ferries to both islands leave from Ceiba, a 75 to 90 minute drive from San Juan, not from Fajardo. Fares are $2.00 to Vieques and $2.25 to Culebra each way for adults, with a higher non-resident fare postponed to 31 December 2026, so confirm at the Puerto Rico Ferry rates page . The first Culebra sailing is at 3:30am, the crossing takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, weekend sailings sell out, and tickets go on sale one to two months ahead. A same-day return by ferry makes for a very long day, so most visitors stay overnight. Cape Air flies from San Juan to Culebra in about 35 to 40 minutes. Mosquito Bay on Vieques needs an overnight stay.
Toro Verde and the mountains
Toro Verde in Orocovis is about 1 to 1.5 hours southwest of San Juan. Its Monster zip line is $114.99 and reservations are required.
Guavate, Luquillo and Piñones
Guavate on PR-184 near Cayey is known for roast pork restaurants called lechoneras, which are busiest at weekends and often closed on weekdays. The family-run kiosks at Luquillo and in Piñones serve fried snacks, and prices vary. Piñones has a bike path of about 11 kilometres, with some worn boardwalk sections. Open Atlantic beaches on this coast can have strong rip currents, so swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
