Multi Day Trips From San Juan
San Juan works as a base for two to four nights, with the forts and museums in town and the rainforest, bioluminescent bay and mountains on day trips. Two longer options, Culebra and Vieques, each need an overnight. Choose lodging by area on a booking site, since this page names no specific hotels. Prices are in US dollars and often add Puerto Rico’s 11.5% sales tax. Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.
A three-day plan from San Juan
Day 1, Old San Juan. Buy the $10 ticket for El Morro and San Cristóbal (ages 16 and over, valid 24 hours for both, card only, open 9am to 5pm). The forts are just under a mile apart along the wall. The Paseo de la Princesa, a promenade of about 300 metres along the south wall, is open at any hour and is a good sunset walk. The National Park Service page has the current rules, including the lawn closure at El Morro.
Day 2, El Yunque and Fajardo. Spend the morning in the rainforest, about an hour from San Juan. The PR-191 corridor is free with no reservation, and El Portal costs $8 for ages 16 and over. La Mina Falls and the summit trail are closed. In the evening, take a guided Laguna Grande kayak tour of about 2 hours, from about $70. Swimming is not allowed there. It is a late drive back to San Juan.
Day 3, a beach, a museum or Casa Bacardí. Balneario de Escambrón has lifeguards, while Condado and Ocean Park have dangerous rip currents, so do not swim there. Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is free on Thursday from 5 to 8pm. Casa Bacardí in Cataño runs tours from $40, for guests aged 18 and over only.
Culebra overnight
Ferries leave from Ceiba, a 75 to 90 minute drive from San Juan, never from Fajardo. Adult fares are $2.25 each way, with a higher non-resident fare postponed to 31 December 2026, so check the Puerto Rico Ferry rates . The first sailing is at 3:30am, the crossing takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, and weekend tickets sell out weeks ahead. Visitors cannot bring a car on the ferry, so rent a golf cart or jeep on the island. Cape Air flies there in about 35 to 40 minutes. Flamenco Beach may charge a small gate fee.
Vieques overnight
Vieques is reached from Ceiba by ferry at $2.00 each way, or by small plane. Guinness World Records lists Mosquito Bay as the brightest bioluminescent bay. Tours are guided only, motorboats and jet skis are banned, and swimming is not allowed. The darkest nights fall around the new moon, with new moons due on 9 November and 8 December 2026. See bioluminescent bay rules before you book.
Central mountains loop
Toro Verde in Orocovis, about 1 to 1.5 hours southwest, has a 1.57 mile zip line at $114.99. Guavate on PR-184 near Cayey has roast pork restaurants, busiest at weekends and often closed on weekdays.
