Abu Dhabi Day Trips: Al Ain, Jebel Hafeet
Travel advisory: Since 28 February 2026 Iran has fired missiles and drones at the UAE, and debris from intercepted missiles has come down in parts of Abu Dhabi. Regional strikes and retaliation have carried on since 8 July, according to the UK FCDO. That body does not advise against travel to the UAE, but the US State Department rates the country Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”. On the road, keep away from security and military sites, never pick up or touch missile or drone fragments, and shelter indoors if a phone alert tells you to. Filming or posting strikes and interceptions is illegal. Read the UK FCDO guidance and the US travel advisory before setting out. The trips below assume calm conditions.
Day trips from Abu Dhabi head inland to Al Ain, a drive of about 140 to 160 km that takes around 90 minutes. The Louvre, the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and Yas Island are city sights, so they belong in your city days and not in a day-trip plan. Costs here are in UAE dirhams (AED, about 3.67 to the US dollar). Summer highs reach 40 to 46 degrees C, so go between November and March if you can, or start at dawn.
Al Ain Oasis
Al Ain is part of the UNESCO listing “Cultural Sites of Al Ain”, inscribed in 2011. The oasis covers about 1,200 hectares with roughly 147,000 date palms and a working falaj irrigation channel. Entry is free and it is open daily from 9am to 7pm, with flat, shaded paths that suit a slow walk. Details are on the Visit Al Ain oasis page .
Forts, palace and museum
Al Jahili Fort and the Al Ain Palace Museum are described as free in several guides, but their hours are reported differently, so check before you set off. Al Ain Museum charges about AED 47 for adults, and children under 18 enter free.
Jebel Hafeet
A paved road of about 11.7 km climbs to roughly 1,249 m, and driving it costs nothing. It is open around the clock, but the upper stretch is unlit, so avoid it after dark. The summit is several degrees cooler and often windy, and the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet sits at the top. Bronze Age Hafit tombs near the base are part of the UNESCO listing. See UAE Inform on Jebel Hafeet .
Al Ain Zoo and Wadi Adventure
Al Ain Zoo describes itself as the largest zoo in the Middle East, and its prices are best read on its own site. Wadi Adventure is also in Al Ain and not in Abu Dhabi city. Its prices and hours are reported inconsistently, so confirm directly before planning around it.
Getting there
By car it is about 90 minutes. The express intercity bus to Al Ain, route X90, takes about 2 hours, and fares are reported at about AED 25 to 30. The Abu Dhabi Mobility site at admobility.gov.ae lists current services. For a guided option, compare Al Ain day tours .
Trips that need a night
Sir Bani Yas Island is about 250 km west. The drive to the Jebel Dhanna jetty takes around 2 hours, then a short boat ride follows, so door to door is about 3 to 3.5 hours and a same-day return is tight. Plan it as an overnight; see the Visit Abu Dhabi island page . Liwa Oasis is about 250 km south, 2.5 to 3 hours by road, with Tal Moreeb about 25 km beyond it. Treat Liwa as an overnight too, or a very long day.
