Walking in San Juan del Sur
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: The US State Department rates Nicaragua Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. It cites the risk of wrongful detention of US citizens, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and very limited consular help, and some visitors have been refused entry or expelled. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners must stay out of political activity and that drones are prohibited. San Juan del Sur itself is a long-established tourist town. Read the US State Department advisory and the UK FCDO advice before you book, carry travel insurance and leave any drone at home.
A Walk-It-Yourself Town
San Juan del Sur is small enough to explore on foot, and walking here is a self-guided activity. There is no established walking-tour scene in town, so the routes below are ones you can do alone, at your own pace.
Up to the Christ Statue
The most rewarding walk is the climb from the northern end of town to the Christ of the Mercy statue. It follows a steep brick road, and there are steps in places. Cars can also drive up, so you can walk up and take a taxi down, or the reverse. The statue is about 24 m tall including its pedestal, and entry is about US$2 for foreigners. Go in daylight and keep valuables out of sight, as thieves have been reported on the climb.
The Beachfront
The bay’s beach runs along the edge of town, lined with more than a dozen bars and restaurants. The best time to stroll it is golden hour, when the light is soft and locals gather for volleyball and football on the sand. Ask locally before you swim, because the surf and the water quality vary.
The Town Centre
The centre is compact and easy to cover in an hour or two on foot. It has the market and the main street, and a slow loop with a stop for lunch is enough. Keep phones and bags close in the busier parts, and carry small bills in US dollars or córdobas.
A Guided Morning
The one regular guided activity on foot is the chocolate tour at Casa Oro Eco Hostel in the town centre. It is a guided half-morning cacao session held on Saturdays at 10:30 and costs US$10. Check the Casa Oro Group page for the current schedule.
Walking Tips
- Start early or late, because the midday sun is strong.
- Wear closed shoes for the climb to the statue.
- Avoid walking unlit roads at night.
- Leave any drone at home, because drones are prohibited in Nicaragua.
