Sightseeing in San Juan del Sur
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: The US State Department rates Nicaragua Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. It cites the risk of wrongful detention of US citizens, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and very limited consular help, and some visitors have been refused entry or expelled. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners must stay out of political activity and that drones are prohibited. San Juan del Sur itself is a long-established tourist town. Read the US State Department advisory and the UK FCDO advice before you book, carry travel insurance and leave any drone at home.
The Sights in Short
Sightseeing here is mostly about views and beaches, and nearly everything fits into one or two easy days. The statue and the bay are in town, and the beaches lie along the coast on either side.
Cristo de la Misericordia
The Christ of the Mercy statue stands above the northern end of the bay. It was completed in 2009 and stands about 24 m tall in total, a 15 m statue on a 9 m pedestal. At the base a small chapel has displays on Christ statues around the world, and a circular walkway gives views over the bay. Entry is about US$2 for foreigners, and hours are reported as 08:00 to 17:00.
You can climb the steep road or drive up and park at the top. The best light is at sunset, but go up in the afternoon and come down while there is daylight. Thieves have been reported on the climb, so keep valuables out of sight.
The Town Beach and Bay
The horseshoe bay is lined with more than a dozen beachside bars and restaurants, and locals play volleyball and football on the sand around sunset. Ask locally about the water quality and the surf before you swim.
Playa Marsella
Marsella, about 25 to 35 minutes from town, has gently lapping water and is the beach to choose for swimming with children. It is not a surf beach.
Playa Majagual
Majagual, about 30 to 40 minutes away, is quiet and almost undeveloped, with little shade and waves a bit bigger than at Marsella. Bring water and sun protection.
Playa Ocotal
Ocotal is a mile-long beach that is almost always deserted. You reach it by staying at Morgan’s Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge, about 13 km (25 minutes) from town, or by walking north from Majagual.
A Note on the Surf Beaches
Maderas, Hermosa and Yankee are surf beaches with strong currents and no lifeguards. The UK government reports drownings on parts of this coast, with no warning signs and no rescue equipment. Take photographs from the sand and swim only where the water is calm.
Practical Tips
- Distances along the coast vary by source, so allow about 20 to 30 minutes for most beaches and ask your driver.
- Agree taxi fares before you set off.
- Drones are prohibited in Nicaragua, so leave yours at home.
