Family Activities in San Juan del Sur
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: The US State Department rates Nicaragua Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. It cites the risk of wrongful detention of US citizens, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and very limited consular help, and some visitors have been refused entry or expelled. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners must stay out of political activity and that drones are prohibited. San Juan del Sur itself is a long-established tourist town. Read the US State Department advisory and the UK FCDO advice before you book, carry travel insurance and leave any drone at home.
Choosing a Beach With Children
The surf beaches near San Juan del Sur have strong currents and no lifeguards, so the beach you pick matters more than anything else on a family trip. Playa Marsella, about 25 to 35 minutes from town, is the calm swim beach, with gentle water that suits children. It is not a surf beach. Playa Remanso, about 5 to 20 minutes south, is the closest surf beach to town. Its mellow waves suit beginner lessons, and swimming is possible on low-swell days, but it can get heavy in the middle of the wet season. Ask locally before letting children into the water.
Playa Hermosa has a beach club behind a private gate of about US$3 per person, with shade, hammocks and a restaurant. The surf there is heavy, so children should stay at the shoreline. Do not count on a lifeguard being on duty at any beach in the area, and keep small children within arm’s reach of the water.
Cristo de la Misericordia
The Christ of the Mercy statue above the northern end of the bay makes a short family outing. It is about 24 m tall including its pedestal, and there is a small chapel at the base with displays on Christ statues around the world, plus a circular walkway with views over the bay. Entry is about US$2 for foreigners. Cars can drive up and park at the top, which is easier than the steep walk with small children. Go in daylight, keep bags and phones out of sight, and plan to be back down before dusk. Hours are reported as 08:00 to 17:00, so check on the day.
Treetops and Trails
Aventura Las Nubes is a canopy park on the ridge about 10 minutes above town. Its minimum age is about 8 to 10 depending on the child’s weight. Families who would rather stay on the ground can walk the trails and watch for howler monkeys. Ask for prices when you book.
Turtle Hatchling Season
The La Flor refuge, about 18 to 22 km south of town, protects an olive ridley nesting beach. Hatching runs roughly from October to February. It suits older children with adult supervision. The drive is on dirt roads with seasonal stream crossings, and the night drive is the main hazard, so use a driver who knows the road. Casa Oro Eco Hostel sells a turtle trip for US$30 from July to February, and no tour can promise turtles. Never touch turtles, eggs or hatchlings, use no flash and no white light, and follow the rangers’ instructions.
Practical Tips
- Bring sun protection, because shade is limited at Majagual and Marsella.
- Agree taxi fares before you set off, and use pre-arranged drivers after dark.
- Pay in US dollars, with small bills.
