Gansbaai Activities: Cage Dives and Penguins
Where Things Happen
Gansbaai sits in the Overberg of the Western Cape, about 160 to 165 km from Cape Town. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours on the road, and up to 3 hours in heavy traffic. Hermanus is about 40 minutes away along the R43. Most activities cluster in Kleinbaai, where the shark and whale boats leave from the harbour. De Kelders has the cliffs and Walker Bay Nature Reserve, while Franskraal and Perlemoenbaai are quiet seaside villages. Prices below are in South African rand (R). Avoid driving after dark, and swim only in sheltered spots, because strong sea currents cause drownings on this coast.
Shark Cage Diving
Cage diving is the main reason people come. Marine Dynamics runs trips from Kleinbaai Harbour on the catamaran Slashfin, with its office at 5 Geelbek Street, and the boat ride to the anchor point takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You stay at the surface in a cage and hold your breath when a shark swims past, so no scuba certificate is needed. The crew attract sharks with chum and a bait line.
Great white sharks have been rare around Gansbaai since about 2017, and operators say sightings cannot be guaranteed. The sharks most divers see now are bronze whalers and broadnose sevengills. Treat a dive as a good chance of those two, a small chance of a white shark, and a possibility that no sharks come to the cage on the day. Trips run year-round, weather permitting.
The 2026 Marine Dynamics rates per person are R3,655 for an international adult and R2,070 for an international child under 12. South African citizens pay R2,268 for an adult and R1,188 for a child, and children under 5 go free. A compulsory R150 conservation fee goes to the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, and the ticket includes a free visit to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary. Reports describe breakfast, a wetsuit and a snack as part of the trip, so ask at booking what is included. A shuttle costs R1,000 per person from Cape Town and R700 from Hermanus.
White Shark Projects, at 16 Geelbek Street, is a separate company with its own prices and trip logs. Apex Shark Expeditions is another operator whose pages feature bronze whalers and sevengills.
African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary
The sanctuary in Kleinbaai opened in 2015 and is run by the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. It rescues and rehabilitates African penguins and other seabirds. Entry is free, it is open daily from 09:00 to 16:00, and the public penguin feeding is at 15:00. Donations are welcome. The birds on view depend on which patients are in care, so a particular species is never certain.
Marine Big 5 Boat Trip
Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tours, the brand formerly called Dyer Island Cruises, runs the Marine Big 5 trip from Kleinbaai. Expect seals, penguins and dolphins, plus whales in season. Adults pay R2,340 and children under 12 pay R1,725, with under 5s free and the same R150 conservation fee on top. South African citizens pay R1,728 for an adult and R864 for a child. Trips last about 2 to 2.5 hours.
Swimming Spots
The open coast has cold water, rips and sharks. For a paddle, Stanford’s Cove in De Kelders is a sheltered cove with a lawn, toilets and outdoor showers. The tidal pool on Kus Weg in Perlemoenbaai is another calm option. Kleinbaai Harbour is a working harbour, not a beach.
