Udawalawe on a Multi-Day Sri Lanka Route
Udawalawe works as a one-night stop on a longer journey rather than a multi-day base. Most visitors stay one or two nights, enough for an afternoon safari, a night near the park and a second safari at dawn. It sits neatly between the hill country and the south coast, so the usual order runs Ella or Nuwara Eliya, then Udawalawe, then Tissamaharama and Yala or Tangalle. Distances below are by private car and approximate.
Three days: Ella to Udawalawe to Yala
Day 1. Leave Ella for Udawalawe, about 100 km and 2.5 hours. Buduruwagala rock carvings, near Wellawaya on the way, make a good stop. In the afternoon take a jeep safari, and if timing allows, catch the 14:30 milk feeding at the Elephant Transit Home. Sessions are usually about 10:30, 14:30 and 18:00, so confirm on the day.
Day 2. Go into the park at dawn, then drive to Tissamaharama, about 71 km and 1.5 to 2 hours. Spend the afternoon on a Yala drive. Yala’s blocks close for dry-weather rest from time to time, and Blocks 1 and 2 were shut from 14 September to 15 October 2026, so check with the Department of Wildlife Conservation before booking.
Day 3. Continue to the coast.
Four days: hill country to south coast
Day 1. Ella, with Ravana Falls about 5 km away on the Ella to Wellawaya road.
Day 2. Transfer to Udawalawe and take an afternoon safari.
Day 3. Morning safari, then drive to Tangalle, about 54 km and 1.5 hours.
Day 4. Continue to Galle, which is a longer leg. Galle is about 130 km and 3 hours from Udawalawe.
If you reach Mirissa, whale watching runs November to April, with December to March the peak. It is not a day trip from Udawalawe, since Mirissa is about 110 km and 2 to 3 hours away.
Getting there and moving on
From Colombo, allow about 4 hours by car, covering about 180 to 195 km. Kandy is about 175 to 190 km and 4 to 5 hours away. Udawalawe has no railway station, and the nearest rail on the south coast line is Beliatta. For hill country by rail, Nanu Oya to Ella to Badulla runs, but no through Kandy to Ella journey operates at present, so check railway.gov.lk. By bus, Colombo to Embilipitiya takes about 3.5 hours, with a local bus on to Udawalawe.
Where to stay
Sleeping inside the park is not permitted. Stay in Udawalawe town or at a lodge on the park fringe, and plan to leave for the gate around 05:30 to 06:00.
Before you travel
Every foreign visitor needs an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before arriving in Sri Lanka. Heavy monsoon rain can cause floods and landslides, so check FCDO advice and the forecast. FCDO notes weekly fuel quotas, with special arrangements for tour operators and hotels, so confirm your transfer in advance.
