Romantic Getaways in San Juan del Sur
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: The US State Department rates Nicaragua Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. It cites the risk of wrongful detention of US citizens, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and very limited consular help, and some visitors have been refused entry or expelled. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners must stay out of political activity and that drones are prohibited. San Juan del Sur itself is a long-established tourist town. Read the US State Department advisory and the UK FCDO advice before you book, carry travel insurance and leave any drone at home.
A Couple’s Weekend on the Pacific
San Juan del Sur works for couples because the day has an easy shape: a beach in the morning, a long lunch, a sunset and dinner on the bay. The best romantic stops here are the sunset spots and a handful of quiet places to stay.
Sunset on the Water
Casa Oro Eco Hostel, in the town centre, sells a shared catamaran sail for US$80, running from 13:00 to 18:00 with snacks and an open bar. The minimum is six people, so it is a social trip and not a private one. Private charters for up to eight guests are listed from about US$800 to 1,300.
Where to Stay
Morgan’s Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge is about 13 km, or 25 minutes, north of town. It has 15 bungalows and three two-bedroom villas on 4,000 acres, nearly half of which is a private reserve, and it fronts Playa Ocotal, a mile-long beach. Sea turtles nest on the beach, though sightings are not guaranteed. See the Morgan’s Rock website for current details.
TreeCasa Hotel and Resort has an infinity pool facing the Pacific and the skyline of the Christ statue. Room counts and addresses vary by listing, so confirm the location when you book.
Sunset Spots
The Christ of the Mercy statue sits above the northern end of the bay, about 24 m tall including its pedestal. The viewpoint is best at sunset, and entry is about US$2 for foreigners. Hours are reported as 08:00 to 17:00, so check on the day, go up in the afternoon and walk or drive down while there is still daylight. The climb is steep, and thieves have been reported on it, so keep valuables out of sight.
Quiet Beach Walks
Playa Majagual is quiet and little developed, with almost no shade. Playa Ocotal, beyond it, is a mile-long beach that is almost always deserted. You reach it by staying at Morgan’s Rock or by walking north from Majagual. Neither beach has lifeguards, so wade rather than swim, especially where the waves are bigger.
Dinner on the Bay
The bay is lined with beachside bars and restaurants. El Timón, a long-running beachfront seafood place, is a classic spot for dinner, and any beachfront palapa gives you the sunset view. Prices are not fixed, so ask before you order.
Practical Tips
- Taxis and pre-arranged drivers are the way to get home after dark. Agree the fare first.
- Pay in US dollars, with small bills.
- Beaches outside the bay have strong currents and no lifeguards.
