Turks and Caicos Multi-Day Island Trips
As of October 2026, the US State Department lists the Turks and Caicos Islands at Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution”, for crime, and the UK FCDO says Providenciales and Grand Turk see more serious crime than the other islands. Keep valuables out of sight, and check every bag before each flight: any ammunition, even one stray bullet, carries a minimum 12-year sentence. Hurricane season runs to the end of November, so ask about cancellation terms for trips between June and November. The UK FCDO safety advice has the full wording.
Staying more than a day opens up the quieter islands. Prices are in US dollars, and ferry and flight schedules shift with the season, so confirm each leg before you book a hotel.
Two days on North and Middle Caicos
Take the ferry from Heaving Down Rock Marina (also called Walkin Marina) on Providenciales to Bellefield Landing on North Caicos. It takes 25 to 30 minutes and costs $40 one way or $70 return. Arrange a rental car in advance, because Middle Caicos has no ferry and no working airport, and the only link is the causeway from North Caicos.
Plan the first day on North Caicos, with Wade’s Green Plantation, about six minutes from the landing. Plan the second day on Middle Caicos at Mudjin Harbour, a 3-mile limestone coast with an open-faced cave and a cliff-top overlook, and at the Conch Bar Caves. Dragon Cay Resort, beside Mudjin Bar & Grill, is the named access point to the harbour. The sandbar to Dragon Cay is dangerous for swimming in swell, and the beach has no lifeguards.
Grand Turk and Salt Cay
No ferry links Providenciales with Grand Turk or Salt Cay. Fly Providenciales to Grand Turk in about 30 minutes with Caicos Express Airways or interCaribbean. Caicos Express also flies Providenciales to Salt Cay for about $210 to $230 return.
Between the two Turks islands runs the Salt Cay Community Ferry on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It leaves Salt Cay at about 7:30 AM and Grand Turk at about 2:00 PM, takes about one hour, and costs $15 return for an adult or $8 one way. A sensible plan is two nights on Grand Turk, then the afternoon ferry to Salt Cay for a night or two.
A winter stay on Salt Cay
About 100 people live on Salt Cay, mostly older residents, and the main settlement is Balfour Town, founded about 1673. Wild donkeys roam, and Deane’s Dock is the main port. Salt raking was the main income for about 250 years and declined from the early 1930s. The White House and the sluice gates at Deane’s Dock are the visible remains. January to April brings humpback whales, and Salt Cay Divers runs seasonal trips, though sightings are never guaranteed.
Providenciales as a base
Staying in one place suits many travellers. From Providenciales you can reach Grace Bay, Chalk Sound, Little Water Cay and North Caicos in a day each. Grace Bay Beach is a little over 3 miles long with no lifeguards. Roads are left-hand drive, and the Leeward Highway has an increasing number of night-time accidents.
