Family Activities in Puerto Ayora
Puerto Ayora suits families because the main sights are close together and many involve animals you can watch from a safe distance. The town is small, the waterfront is easy to walk, and most days can be built around one outing with a rest in between. Prices are in US dollars.
Park fees for children
Children pay a reduced Galápagos National Park entry fee on arrival, in cash. Currently it is USD 100 for foreign children under 12, and USD 50 for children from Andean Community and Mercosur countries. Children under 2 are free. Fees change, so check the park’s official schedule and its current rules for child entry before you go.
Research station and Tortoise Route
The Charles Darwin Research Station is open daily from 08:00 to 18:00 and the exhibition hall is free. Children can look at whale skeletons and natural history collections, then continue to the Fausto Llerena Breeding Center on the guided Tortoise Route, where young tortoises are raised. The route runs from 08:00 to 16:45 and costs about USD 10 with a guide. It also passes the exhibit room for Lonesome George, and he was the last of his kind.
Highland tortoise reserves
At El Chato and Rancho Primicias, wild giant tortoises walk across the paths and lava tunnels run underground. Entry is about USD 10 per person with a guide, and you do not need to book ahead. Paths are muddy and boots are often lent. Give the tortoises 2 m of space, which is a good rule for children to practise, and do not let them touch or feed any animal. The drive takes 30 to 45 minutes each way.
A calm swim at Playa Mansa
Tortuga Bay has two beaches. Playa Brava is the first and is off limits for swimming because of rip currents. Playa Mansa is the sheltered bay with shallow, calm water, and adults should stay with children at all times.
The walk in is about 2.5 km each way on a paved path and takes 30 to 45 minutes, in strong equatorial sun. For young children that is a long day, so bring water, hats and sunscreen, or take a water taxi from the pier for about USD 10 each way. Sign in and out at the park booth, and check that the beach is open, since the park can close it when the sea is rough.
Pelican Bay fish market and the waterfront
The open-air fish market on the waterfront is where fishermen fillet the catch while pelicans and sea lions gather nearby. Opening hours vary, so check before you go. The Avenida Charles Darwin waterfront walk links the pier and the research station.
Bay boat tours
A glass-bottom or bay boat tour with a licensed operator is a gentle way onto the water for younger children.
Safety notes
Check current government advice before you travel. The islands sit outside the mainland areas named in UK advice for Ecuador . Use reef-safe sunscreen and keep plastic bottles out of protected areas.
