Multi-Day Trips in Armenia from Yerevan
Travel advice: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan; the US lists Armenia at Level 2 and tells travellers not to go to the Azerbaijan border region. The routes in this guide lie outside those areas, but check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go and stay on main roads in Syunik and Tavush, without detours toward the border.
Armenia is compact, but the mountain roads make distances feel longer than the map suggests. These are the multi-day shapes that work from Yerevan. Fares and prices are in Armenian dram (AMD), approximate, with rough dollar figures at about 370 to 390 AMD to the dollar.
Yerevan as a base, 4 to 5 nights
Most first-time visitors sleep in Yerevan and fan out on day trips: Garni and Geghard (about 30 to 35 km), Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank (about 120 km, roughly 2 hours each way) and Echmiadzin (about 20 km). Keep the Areni and Noravank run as its own day, with Khor Virap on the way. Days in the city itself fit around the museum closings: the Matenadaran and the History Museum are closed Mondays.
South to Goris and Tatev, 2 nights
Tatev is the reason to head south. There is no direct minibus from Yerevan: take a Goris marshrutka (about 3,000 to 4,000 AMD, 4.5 to 5 hours) from the Kilikia terminal (confirm the departure point on the day), or hire a driver. Sleep in Goris, then take a taxi to the Halidzor station for the Wings of Tatev, a 5,752 m ride of about 12 minutes. Fares from March to November are 6,500 AMD one way and 9,000 AMD return (about $17 and $24), and the cable car is closed on Mondays. Tatev Monastery itself is free to enter. A same-day return from Yerevan is possible but means roughly 9 to 11 hours of driving. Stick to the main road: the cable car and the Goris to Halidzor road are the normal route. See the official Wings of Tatev page .
Sevan and Dilijan, 1 to 2 nights
Take Lake Sevan on the way north and sleep in Dilijan, a forested town in Tavush province with Haghartsin Monastery, Goshavank and the restored Sharambeyan Street. Dilijan lies far from the Ijevan to Noyemberyan road, which the UK advises against. Hikers can walk from Lake Parz to Goshavank, about 6.5 km and roughly 2.5 hours, rated easy by hiking guides. The Sevan water is cool to cold even in August, so treat the lake as a view, with swimming only in July and August. Minibuses to Dilijan cost about 1,500 to 2,000 AMD from Yerevan.
The Lori loop, 1 to 2 nights
Haghpat and Sanahin are UNESCO monasteries in Lori province, about 16 km apart, and free to enter according to secondary sources. The Debed gorge nearby is the only place in Armenia with commercial rafting: Rafting Armenia lists 12,000 AMD per person for an 11 km run of 1.5 to 2 hours, ages 14 and over, from roughly May to autumn. Sleep in Alaverdi or Dilijan. See the rafting operator .
Gyumri, 1 night
Gyumri is a night away by train: daily trains take about 3 hours and cost roughly 1,300 to 2,500 AMD. The timetable changed in September 2026, so check railway.am before booking.
A 7 to 10 day first trip
A week covers Yerevan, Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank, Echmiadzin and one of Sevan and Dilijan. Ten days adds Goris and Tatev as a proper overnight. Under five days, cut Tatev before you cut the near-Yerevan sights.
Moving between regions
Armenia’s land borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed. Georgia and Iran are the open crossings. There is no rail to Tatev, Goris, Dilijan or Jermuk, so plan on minibuses, taxis or a driver.
Hotels in the capital, a practical base for the first nights, are listed on Booking.com .
