Armenia Activities: Museums to Rafting
Travel advice: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan; the US lists Armenia at Level 2 and tells travellers not to go to the Azerbaijan border region. The main sights in this guide lie outside those areas, but check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go and stay on main roads in Syunik and Tavush.
Most of Armenia’s activities sit in Yerevan, with a few worth a longer trip: a record-length cable car, a river for rafting and the wine country around Areni. Prices below are in Armenian dram (AMD), with rough dollar figures at about 370 to 390 AMD to the dollar.
Cascade and Cafesjian Center
The Cascade is a wide stairway at 10 Tamanyan Street with about 570 steps (sources count 555 to 572) and escalators inside the building for anyone who would rather ride. Entry is free. The Cafesjian Center’s exhibition galleries open Friday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00, and a guided tour costs 10,000 AMD per group (about $26), booked ahead. Some listings give the escalator gallery and sculpture garden daily hours of 08:00 to 20:00, so confirm on the day. On a clear day the top looks toward Mount Ararat, which stands in Turkey; summer haze often hides it. Details are on the Cafesjian Center page .
Wings of Tatev cable car
The Wings of Tatev runs 5,752 m from Halidzor to Tatev Monastery, a ride of roughly 12 minutes, and its official site calls it the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway.
- Days: Tuesday to Sunday and holidays; closed Mondays, plus extra closures for weather or technical faults.
- Hours: 10:00 to 19:00 from May to September (last car 18:45); 10:00 to 18:00 in March, April, October and November (last car 17:45, a car every 15 minutes); 10:30 to 17:30 from December to February, with a car every 30 minutes.
- Fares: March to November, 6,500 AMD one way (about $17) or 9,000 AMD return; December to February, 4,000 AMD one way or 5,500 AMD return. Children up to 140 cm pay 1,000 AMD.
- Tickets: non-refundable, though an unused ticket can be exchanged within 14 days.
There is no direct marshrutka from Yerevan. Take a Goris minibus (about 4.5 to 5 hours), then a taxi to the Halidzor station, and consider sleeping in Goris rather than doing the whole trip in a day. Current prices and closures are on the official tickets page .
Debed River rafting
The Debed gorge in Lori province, near Tumanyan and about 3 hours from Yerevan, is the only place in Armenia with commercial rafting. Rafting Armenia lists 12,000 AMD per person (about $32) for an 11 km run of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, for ages 14 and over; another guide quotes 10,000 AMD for groups of four or more on a 12 km run. Difficulty runs from class 3 to 4 depending on the spring flow. The season runs roughly May to autumn, so confirm the dates when you book. See the operator page .
Matenadaran
The Matenadaran manuscript museum is at 53 Mashtots Avenue and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:50, closed Sunday, Monday and public holidays. Adults pay 2,000 AMD (about $5), ages 6 to 18 pay 1,000 AMD and under-6s are free. A guided tour costs 5,000 AMD for up to 10 people in Armenian or a foreign language, or 7,000 AMD for 11 or more. The collection numbers tens of thousands of manuscripts; counts vary by source. Check the ticket page .
Parajanov Museum
The museum for the filmmaker Sergei Parajanov is open daily from 10:30 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:15. Adults pay 1,500 AMD, students and retirees 750 AMD, and children under 12 enter free. Tours cost 2,000 AMD in Armenian or 5,000 AMD in a foreign language, and audio guides 1,000 AMD (Armenian) or 3,000 AMD (foreign). The street is signed Parajanov Street; older maps show Dzoragyugh 15/16. Prices are on the museum site .
Areni wine tasting
Hin Areni runs tasting rooms in Areni village and, since 2024, one beside Areni-1 Cave; the Areni Wine Factory dates from 1994. Tasting prices vary by operator, so ask before you sit down. Areni-1 itself is an excavation of an ancient winemaking site, not a tasting room. Areni is about 2 hours from Yerevan, so name a driver for the day. See Hin Areni .
Yerevan Wine Days
Held in early June, the 2026 festival ran 5 to 7 June, its tenth edition, on Saryan, Tumanyan and Moskovyan streets. No ticket price has been confirmed, so check the organisers’ announcements for the year you travel (news report ).
Planning tips
Mondays are the awkward day: the Matenadaran, the History Museum and the Wings of Tatev are all closed, while the Parajanov Museum and the Cascade stay open. Tour marketplaces list guided wine and city activities from Yerevan; see the GetYourGuide Yerevan search .
