Romantic Kingston: Hills and Harbour
Travel advice, October 2026: Jamaica has high rates of violent crime, concentrated in inner-city neighbourhoods, and both the UK FCDO and the US State Department name areas to avoid, including parts of Kingston. Use licensed or hotel-arranged transport, avoid walking after dark, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go.
Kingston is a working city of about 670,000 people, with no resort strip, no beachfront hotels and no calm lagoon in the centre. Its romantic side is limited but real: a hotel on a mountain spur, an old estate at dusk, a Sunday sound system on a ridge and a small cay reached by boat. Couples who want white sand and all-inclusive resorts will find them elsewhere on the island, and a few nights in Kingston pair well with a stay on the coast. Every evening plan below assumes a pre-arranged driver, because walking after dark is not advised anywhere in the city.
Strawberry Hill
Strawberry Hill sits at about 3,100 ft (945 m) in Irish Town on a mountain spur above Kingston, and belongs to Chris Blackwell’s Island Outpost group. It has 12 Georgian-style cottages with fretwork, shutters and verandas, a restaurant, a spa and an infinity pool that looks out over the city and the harbour. The air is noticeably cooler than in town. Confirm that it is open and who runs it before you book, as one report says the hotel was offered for sale. Allow about 45 minutes by road from New Kingston.
An evening at Devon House
Devon House on Hope Road is open daily from 9:30 to 22:00, and its South Lawn from 9:30 to 18:00. Come in the late afternoon, share a cup of ice cream from Devon House I-Scream, and walk the grounds under the old trees. Dinner at the Steak House on the Verandah or a drink at the Mahogany Tree Bar completes the evening. Book a taxi back to your hotel before you sit down.
Sunday sunset at the Dub Club
The Kingston Dub Club, at 7b Skyline Drive in Jack’s Hill, opens on Sundays from 17:00 to midnight. Arriving around 17:30 means catching the light over the city and the harbour before the roots and dub sound-system session builds, with the busiest hours from about 21:00 to 23:30. Ital food, juices and herbal teas are on sale. Entry is paid at the door. Hire a driver for the round trip and agree the return time in advance, as app taxis are unreliable up the hill late at night.
A day on Lime Cay
Lime Cay lies about 15 minutes by local boat from Port Royal, from the Y-Knot jetty or the Grand Hotel dock. A return fare of about J$1,500 per adult has been reported, paid in cash. The water is shallow and clear, good for swimming and snorkelling. There are no facilities, so bring water, food, shade and sunscreen, and take your rubbish away. Weekdays are quiet and Sunday afternoons are lively with boats. The FCDO advises against deserted beaches even in daytime, so go with a group or on a busier day and agree a pick-up time with the boatman.
Planning
December to April is dry and cool. May and October are the rainiest months, and hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Hotels cluster in New Kingston, and stays can be compared on Booking.com .
